Have you run the setup disk that came with your camera on your computer? It will need to install the new drivers for the camera. If not, do that first before you connect your camera.
Do you have a firewire that you can use to connect to your camera to your computer? If not it won't work. The data transfer will not be fast enough. They are cheapest on ebay. Retail stores will rob you. I had to buy and install a firewire card on my computer when I got my camera. (It is a few years old.
It was a hotrod computer when we got it and it still keeps up well but sometimes I have to add new periferals).
This is what the ends of the cable that I use look like.
Also do you have Windows XP? If not you can still use the software that came with your camcorder but it is probably not as user friendly.
If you have a firewire and XP, plug the wire into your camera's socket labeled DV and your computer, then turn on the camera and follow the on screen directions. Again, use great care when connecting the cable to your camcorder. The ports are fragile.
If you have Windows XP go ahead and open windows Movie Maker and you will see that the first function on the list is Capture video from a device. It will give you a choice of devices. If your camera is attached it will let you select it. From there it is a matter of following the instructions on the screen.
Video takes a lot of disk space and an hour-long video will take a while for the program to render it into scenes that you can edit and string together.
I will pm my cell number to you if you would like help when you are ready.
