There's a small group of particularly nasty people here on the forum that have made it a pretty sour place for me. I actually hate coming to the forum nowadays. More than one of these has suggested that I stay in Tech, but to me the forum is an all or nothing deal.
To all those who I call friend here, who called me when I was in the hospital and who have stood by me over the years, you mean the world to me. I really wanted to stay, but my life is too short to put up with the crap from the Usual Suspects. I'll check back in after the elections, maybe the stench in here won't be so bad then.

You could always just do what I learned to do; stay out of threads where I know my opinion won't be popular. (Or be prepared to face the wrath if I don't) It's been a lot more fun around here since I stopped engaging in every exercise in futility that popped up. I figured out that just because I *can* say something, or might *want* to say something, doesn't necessarily mean I should. I get a lot of relief from typing out replies that I never post. Just typing them gets it out of my system, and then I can just delete it and move along. I figure that in the end, it has precisely the same effect as if I had actually posted it. None. But that's just me. Either way, I know we have some different opinions and things got heated between us a few times, but you're OK as far as I'm concerned. Good luck whatever you ultimately decide to do.
Taijiguy pretty much nailed what I was going to post word for word - especially the part about typing resonses and deleting them, just to get the words out without posting seems to bring a relief. Something I have definately been doing more of lately.
But for only interacting with you on this board, I think you are a hell of a guy Jazzman. I know you and I are almost polar opposites on some of our beliefs, but I still enjoy your posts. Whatever you decide, take care man.
James, go on the main menu page, click on the expand thing under the OT section and click off the politics button!! Problem solved!!!! You won't even have to see any of the political stuff then, unless someone does't check that box that is!!
I don't get into it with anyone politically. I know where I stand, and I'm not going to tell someone with a different view that their view is wrong. I sometimes just can't see the others side, but then again, they can't see mine either. It doesn't mean you have to put the other person down or anything like I've seen. I for one, don't see eye to eye with you politically, but that doesn't mean we can't be friends. So yeah, I love you dearly too!! You are a very important part of this forum, your car knowledge is indispensible and you're a terrific person who's very giving too.
So, don't leave, just breathe a bit, in, out, in, out then unclick that button. Or better yet, just ignore those threads.

James, I hate to see you depart. We haven't always agreed but I think we've managed to stay cordial. I've always enjoyed talking to you in person. Don't let the "stuff" on the internet get to ya. I did for a while and now pretty much have the same attitude as Taijiguy or however the hell he spells it. Looking forward to your return and getting this election over with. Maryjane may have the answer as scary as that may sound.
Ron
Edited to fix the spelling of Taijiguy's screen name. What the heck does that stand for anyway?

There's a small group of particularly nasty people here on the forum that have made it a pretty sour place...
I know exactly what you mean.
There seem to be a few members here who aren’t interested in simply expressing their opinions. No, they wish to take “discussion” a step further at every opportunity to try and embarrass and/or humiliate anyone who doesn’t fit their myopic view of the world.
None of these people are particularly bright, but they are certainly persistent. They pick, pick, pick away until most everyone else just gives up and moves on. I mean seriously, you can only defend yourself in a thread so many times before you realize it’s a complete waste of time to be debating with these particular people.
JazzMan, take the break of which you speak. I did. In my case it was because I was up the coast in the middle of nowhere with no power/computers/internet for eight days. It was wonderful. What a delight not having to worry about responding to insults and nonsense. It’s unfortunate though that a very small number of forum members here can sour the experience for a great many others.
So JazzMan, yes, take the break... but come back when you feel revived. You’re a very valuable asset to this forum (not just in tech) and there would be a huge number of us who would miss your presence here.

Every message board in the world has a bad apple or two, can't be avoided unless you stay out of the threads that you know are going to be trouble. Nothing the matter with taking a short breather, puts things back into perspective. I'll keep my fingers crossed that my little Fiero keeps running without your expert help in Tech, don't stay away for too long ok?

I know exactly what you mean. I've learned too. There are always the same jerks, that want to argue with you no matter what the subject, & no matter how may lies you catch them in (or how many times you prove them wrong). And of course they always twist what you said or add words to it that changes your meaning. Then they give you **** in another thread that has nothing to do with anything else. It's a total waste of time to even come here any more. The only reason I come here at all, is the few good folk that post every once in a while. But the bad posters outweigh the good (in number of posts) about 20 to 1, & it gets old real quick. It's a shame a few idiots can ruin the entire board for several thousand others. I've been turned off on working on my Fieros because of them. But I'm not gonna' let them ruin it for me. I'll work on the Fieros a little now & then, & get back on them more fully after I finish some other projects. I have thought about starting my own Fiero board, but like Cliff I just don't have time to moderate it. The yahoo board has great people, but yahoo sucks. Oh well. Life is hard.... Good luck, Jazzman.

I can empathize with much of your post, but sorry, I can’t agree with this particular statement.
As much as it may be a total waste of time to deal with certain members of this forum, that doesn’t equate with the forum itself being a waste of time to visit. Not at all.

I agree with most...DON'T leave...just take a break. Avoid the threads that get you irritated (I have learned to do that) and continue (please) to give to those of us who need the help. You are a great source of info, and I know that often times it does not seem that it is appreciated, but remember that people did want to help you out not too long ago, simply b/c it was a chance to finally repay you for your help.

I say good luck and good bye. If your very health is affected by the amount of stress that you get out of this forum, then go very far away and don't look back. You have put a lot more in to this forum then it seems that you are getting out of it, so happy trails.
there are threads which by their nature, either begin or turn political, whether checked or not. they generally turn *insert ideology here* because the advocates of that ideology are convinced theyre right, have a positive need to convince others, and are willing to sink to any level to do so.
true, you cannot let evil go unchallenged, but 90% is stupid (despite the occasional appearance of erudition), not evil, and "you cant fix stupid"
ive learned to quickly (first 3 or 4 posts) identify the ideological threads by the most persistent posters, and apart from the occasional peek to see the train wreck, to ignore them. and it's not difficult, because they're boring.

I get a great laugh out of these "I'm taking my toys and going home" threads. I like to refer to them as the "safe, attempted suicides". Ya know, those suicide attempts where someone downs 6 Tylenols and then they themselves immediately call for an ambulance because they say they downed a whole bottle of Tylenol. They do that for attention. Same damn thing here. So they've decided they don't like the neighborhood anymore and announce it to the whole community. Who really cares? Your friends in the neighborhood or in the community do care. Tell them you're leaving..........PRIVATELY.
Boonie posted this same thread. He'll be back.
Nick posted this same thread. He'll be back.
Others have throughout the years and they usually come back. If they don't, the relationships they did have in these forum communities usually carry on through emails and messenger services
Good for Jazzman deciding to leave for awhile. Maybe he'll come back with a new perspective, thicker skin and without a stick up his ass.

As usual, Jazzman makes a very good point. There is a group of very nasty people who want to dominate the forum, and treat it as if it were their very own platform. Anyone who attempts to inject a different opinion or point of view is ridiculed and called names, and rated negatively. These people have pretty much made a nice forum much less interesting with their crass tactics. I won't mention names, everyone knows who they are. Their ringleader is conspicuous by his absence from this thread.

We don't see much eye to eye on political subjects, but I think you're an awesome guy and I really respect your point-of-view on a number of different subjects, many, believe it or not, we agree on more than we disagree.
I haven't had the pleasure in meeting you personally, but I've wished you well on your recovery and hope for the best for you. I know you won't be gone long, because the addiction is too strong, man.
Take a breather and come back to us soon.

Most people have the proverbial protruding stick regarding certain subjects, and that isn't a problem. The problem comes from those who take pleasure from walking by and giving it a whack just because they can.
It's the whacking I did not miss in the least when I was gone for 18 months.
Don't be such a pussy Jazz. You dish it so take it. Leaving the forum is just crybaby ridicules at least for the reasons you are complaining about. Now like Stimpy said if it is affecting your health adversely then you better chill out if you are not cut out for the stress of discourse.
You think people hate you and that is ridicules also. You have a pretty high sense of importance to think like that. I know some of the people you have problems with me included and they don't hate you or think your a bad person. Even Todd has said he thinks your a good person and invaluable to the forum.
Bottom line is don't be such a pussy. You embarrass yourself and make me pity you.

Funny how you pointed yourself out.... Your last sentence tells everyone on you.
