Wife has been wanting a weather vane for a while so got her one last Xmas. Wanted a Sandhills crane but no one makes one so settled for a Heron. Anyway that means you have to have something to mount it on. Just sticking it on the roof wasn't cool so decided to build a cupola. Started with a box. Had to do the stand inside photo like with the motor out of the the car. You'd think a guy could smile though.
Then fill it in with self built vents.
Next build a base.
Next the roof. It's separate from the middle. Three pieces in all so it's easier to get it up the roof.
And finally stick the bird on top. Had to weld up a peak mount for it instead of the hip mount provided.
Total build time 3 days... wish I could paint my car that fast...

I like that! It wouldn't be all that hard to make it vent, its a good idea to vent the hot air out of the roof instead of trying to cool it in the summer.

it's not a bad idea at all to put a vent fan in there, you'll be amazed @ your util bill too, if your attics are conencted and you install one of the attic vent vans, it'll take alot of wear and tear off your A/C. not so sure what to do with it in the winter though, your insulation between attic & cieling needs to be pretty good!

Thinks guys! Funny didn't catch the typo on the heron. It does vent, I remove the roof vent that was in the same location and opened the roof hole more. A fan would be a good idea though as it does get hot in the attic.
But all my house and garage is no maintenance exterior so didn't want to have to paint it. I replace the post with 5x5 pvc fence post and all wood is aluminum wrapped CCA pressure treated pine. Due to the size no vents where available large enough so used window/door drip flashing in saw cuts in the vinly brick molding. Worked out nicely and was less cost.

Wow, you sure know how to make a guy feel unmanly. That is some serious Man work right there. Self made vent? Really? I think I need to go do my makeup now.
Truly nice work, it really does look as if it was original.
