I was wondering if anyone could tell me how to make a relay have a 7 second delay without using solid state components. I was told I could use a capacitor and resistor but cant find anything. Can anyone help??

Why no solid-state?
The timer can be isolated from the circuit with a relay and fused so it wont get damaged in a spike.

If you can give some more details on what your trying to do.

I am trying to have a relay get power 7 seconds after the door is opened on my car. I was gonna take power from the domelight and power a 800mah relay to power the circuit. I just want a 7 second delay between the time the dome light comes on and the relay gets power.

The mid to late Cads use an adjustable one for the delay in turning off the headlights. It is under the dash on the left side.
Used one to make a retained accessories for my Fiero.
I believe the relay has NO and NC contacts.

Oh--ok.

I was gonna say just make the fuse longer, but I see you are working on a car.

Save some time and look up Grainger on the web. They have delay relays, but they are solid state.
The one I used could be set for minutes or seconds. I used an octal base and wired everything to that and all I had to do was plug the relay into the base. Makes service simple.

This part number may not work for your application due to coil voltage, yada yada but you get the idea. You have to specify what you need for your application.

And its no bigger than a fiero fuel pump relay. You may need a contractor to purchase this for you.

Most models.
Just look at the light switch.
It will have a delay setting on the dial.

I dont want solid state because I am not sure how to make everything to make it work. I am looking to make this circuit because of the expense. The cheapest I can find is like 70 bucks.
