Anyone notice anything here? They all went for trendy "edgy" styling and ended up kind of looking all like each other, at least they are all as ugly as each other.

I like the HHR. I would drive an HHR SS Panel no problem...
I like the look too but sure didn't like driving one. The interior room is tight with driver and passenger rubbing elbows. Also hit my head on the roof while getting in and I'm only 5' 7".

I like my HHR.. 2.4 L auto that gets great gas mileage averaging 30.6 mpg since new and now with 75,000 miles on the clock. It is a very utilitarian vehicle. I didn't get it for a performance car after all I have three Fieros
They'll be discontinued by 2012 and GM has nothing scheduled to replace it.

The Nissan Cube isn't a pleasant sight to see on the road. Not only is the shape boring ugly, but the back bumper reminds of one of the face grill from the Star Wars characters.

How did this not make the list?, Looks like it has a serious case of under-bite. If it came in green it would look like a frog.
EDIT for image:
It looks like something that might happen after trip if you turned your car into time and didn't bother get all the bugs out of the software. Oh and maybe hit a wall or whatever head-on in say 1934?

wow, I just read through the article. I honestly don't understand where he's coming from in most of it.
some quality excerpts:
quote
After turning out some real stinkers in recent years, American automakers can take solace from our list, since the Ford Flex and Chevrolet HHR are the only entries from Detroit. One reason why: Ford, GM and Chrysler played it safe this year, and were less likely to try out new combinations in design and aesthetic.
yup, just the same old, same old from Chevy/Ford
quote
Maybe because it's ugly, says John McElroy, the host of Autoline Daily. "For some reason, [Acura] has settled on this grill that I've described as a goofy jack-o-lantern grin," he says. "I don't know anybody who likes it.
Well I'll take it over any boring/ugly toyota/honda front-end, maybe Mr. McElroy doesn't meet many people with opinions different than him.

On the other hand, Mazda ( MZDAF.PK - news - people ) walks a fine line between safe and trendy. The Japan-based automaker sells odd-looking cars like the RX8 that drive well, but that are almost too "faddish," according to McElroy.
See my above post.

My wife has an HHR SS that I drive often. I am 6'4" and it is very comfy, EXCEPT: at traffic lights, I have to lean down to see the signal light (even when WAY behind the stop-line!). Still very fun to drive and very versatile!

For me it's the weird new Fiat. I saw one that was pearl white and I thought it looked like a molar (or a crown for a molar.) Either way, I bet if you lined a bunch of them up they would suitably crush small berries and nuts.
Smart cars are fugly.
Nissan Cube is fugly.
Pruis and Insight are fugly.
All the Acuras are ugly.
And of course, the Bugatti is pug-fugly. How can anything that fast be so devoid of sexy styling? It's like making an Indycar look like a milk truck.

Back in the "day" they (you know, them) sold a prism that you sat on your dash to see the stop lights with. Been years since I've seen them, but I am sure you could find a bauble with the right properties to mimic the effects.
I agree with everything on the list except the Flex. " IF " you need a large SUV, Suburban type vehicle there pretty nice. They compete with Fusion and Caddys for onboard gadgets. All the ridges running down the sides makes it a body shop nitemare, but there on it for a reason...not style. The sheet metal is thinner than average and the ridges keep the panels flat. Sorta like racers put them in aluminum filler panels. Replace that with Kia Soul thats butt ugly. Ive worked on some XBs and theyre junk....but then look where they come from.
I also agree Porsches are awesome. Yea there are some ugly ones but look at the 911. Its still the same classic shape from 1962. You cant change perfection, just improve it. Mercedes screwed up with the same idea when it changed the SLs in 88. They went 20 years with the same iconic shape, then blew it for the sake of fad.

Go to a series sports car races and watch the masses of Porsches pretty much killing everything. I think like in Rolex, the GT class is like 1 out of 3/4 cars is a Porsche GT2. Although the Mazda R8 is a great racecar performance wise, its styling still sucks big time in my opinion.
