From 2000-2010 a net loss of residents at the rate of one every 22 minutes.

DETROIT — Detroit's population plunged 25% in the past decade to 713,777, the lowest count since 1910, four years before Henry Ford offered $5 a day to autoworkers, sparking a boom that quadrupled the Motor City's size in the first half of the 20th century.
By Paul Sancya, AP The Motor City's 237,493-resident decline helped make Michigan the only state to experience a net population loss since 2000.
According to 2010 Census figures released Tuesday, the city lost, on average, one resident every 22 minutes between 2000 and 2010. Detroit officials plan to challenge the figures. .......(more at link)

Good question, needing an answer. A definitive answer can not be had. They fled. Rats (no pun, no pun) fleeing a sinking ship, scatter. When I flee, I look for a better place. Sometimes the first place that is better, ... or I thought was better. Good question Brad. They fled. They did not plan to leave. Maybe somewhat, but they stayed till the last hope. Just like a rat on a sinking ship. I expect the rat populations will be shrinking more in Detroit.

You say that like it is a good thing, . We get our fair share too, but ... we don't need no failed progressives coming down here telling us how we got it all wrong.

You know what gets me ? I see commercials on TV down here all the time touting Michigan. On how we should move, move our businesses, to that ?great? state. , like the word ain't out,
I considered moving to Denver back in the 90s, but upon closer evaluation, found it to be a rather expensive place to live at the time. Perhaps not the case now tho.

Plus, replacing your stolen car once a month can get old after awhile.
If you move to Colorado, don't go to Denver. Go to one of the smaller towns.
Also, keep in mind that not all are failed progressives. Many are escaping progressivism.
Dude, the economy of Detroit was founded on manufacturing, and that manufacturing has gone to countries where peasants work for nothing more than day to day food and survival. It has nothing to do with any political slant, and why you and the other one insisted on bringing that into this thread is questionable. Please keep your personal politics out of non-political threads, all it does is detract and divide.

Non-political? While I do agree that the thread wasn't started in the name of politics, it's really hard not to talk about why Detroit and the rest of MI is in the sh!tter. Yes, the Detroit economy was founded on manufacturing, but the reason that manufacturing jobs are leaving the State and the Country aren't nearly as cut and dried as you're presenting them. Yes, cheap labor is part of it, but that's not the whole story by a long shot, and I hope that even you realize this.

Of course, the shipping of jobs overseas has NOTHING to do with politics, or legislation, or corporate tax rates...
BTW, you probably just inadvertently started a political debate. Good job!
Oh, and since you called me "dude"...

There's a lot of Michiganders in the Chicago area. I would say Chicago used to have an economy based on manufacturing also, but the mayor worked hard to encourage business to come here often by giving them tax breaks. Even more moved south to the RED states.

yes, there are many reasons Detroit is sucking manufacturing moving out is of course #1 the elected mayors is #2 the cyclicly dependant population is #3
Resign yourself to the fact that it ain't gonna happen.
Yeah, a candidate for governor made a comment similar to that here in Texas many years back, let me see if I can find the quote...
''If it's inevitable, just relax and enjoy it.'' He was comparing the cold, foggy weather while preparing for a cattle roundup at his West Texas ranch to a rape.
...when bad men combine, the good must associate; else they will fall, one by one, an unpitied sacrifice in a contemptible struggle." from Thoughts on the Cause of the Present Discontents by Edmund Burke, 1770
Often misquoted as, The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.
I'm not gonna relax and enjoy it anymore.

Like this guy, who was dead for a long time... even the other hobos were living around him, but just never bothered to report it.
I don't claim to be an expert on Detroit... I've never even been there. But based on friends that I have that grew up there, it really is a **** -hole... and it's such a shame because the city has such beautiful homes that are basically abandoned.
Like, take a look at this home. It's a pretty modest home. You can tell that this was a NICE home back in the day with the fancy arch-work. That's one solid home too, the part that burnt down I think is part of it. It's not a small house, probably 3,200 square feet there.
If we had a house like this in Fort Lauderdale, it would be torn down immediately, even in this economy, or it would be rezoned, or restored.

Actually, you might be right. Two of my good friends here just moved from Detroit (actually Detroit, not Michigan) about 4 years ago now. They both were in the IT field, but they went to school for it. They used to work in machine shops as teenagers, and were pretty proficient, because they had to be. They said their dads both worked for the auto industry (Chrysler actually). They're retired, but they couldn't get jobs. They had a tough time growing up there because crime was so rampant, and the draw to get involved in it was strong too. They finally both said "F**K IT" and moved to South Florida where they thought they'd get a better experience. Both of those guys went to school down here, got degrees in IT, and are now thriving, and earning GOOD money... where as before, they were constantly getting in trouble, had no jobs, and basically sitting around. They're both in their mid 30s.
I know another guy who came here from Detroit too, but don't know the whole back story as I'm not that good of a friend yet.

Detroit is unique because every major historical culture or dynasty tends to end with abandoned ruins. In most other places in the world, the land ends up becoming reclaimed by new cultures.
Take Bethlehem for example... three to four layers of cultures. I remeber watching a show on Discovery from a guy who bought an old brick house somewhere in town. The house had been built in like the 1500s or something. They found some loose boards (a make-shift trap door) under a rug in the main part of the house after they bought it, and it led down to a sewer cover which covered the opening to a massive underground chamber. It was a great room to an old Catholic church. After alerting authorities and archeologists to it, they created an entrance to the church and examined the underground ruins, etc. What they found was crazy... underneath the church, they found that from within the basement of the church was another opening that went to an old house from like 1000 BC or something ridiculous...
Detroit is the first of it's kind here in America... because other than the native Indians, there haven't really been anyone else here. There are a lot of ruined old towns from post-Depression times... mostly towns that follow the old train routes, but there's just nothing quite like Detroit... and I fear that it'll probably get worse too. They need to start closing in their city limits. I know they've made an effort to try to repair the city.
Without getting too political here, the strength of the union scares away any prospective business or manufacturer. Otherwise... Detroit would be perfect, I mean... you have thousands of manufacturing plants that are abandoned, with hundreds of thousands of ridiculously cheap homes.

Out of state, anywhere else they have friends/family and can find a job.
As theBDub said, those that do have jobs in Detroit don't live there, and that's not anything new in the last decade, that's been going on for longer than I can remember.
I'm not a part of that number that's left Detroit in the last 10 years, my family has been living in the suburbs for at least 40 years now. I'm perfectly content living in a nice low crime area and being 45 minutes away from Detroit on the off chance that I want to go down there. I bet I'm there 15-20 times a year for Red Wings games, concerts/events at the Fox or State theaters, and the NAIAS. Aside from that, I don't ever go there. Even the bulk of automotive industry still in the metro Detroit area isn't actually in Detroit anymore, it's all moved out to the suburbs with the exception of a small number of fairly old plants.

I may not be able to change human nature, but I will continue to try changing the behavior of individuals on this forum who act like asses by bringing politics into everything and, more importantly, do so in an uncivil and undecorus manner. I'll do so by cajoling, pointing, commenting, observing, noting, asking (politely I might add), etc. Some people think that it is futile for me to try and make this forum a better place. I'd say the reason this forum's civility is where it is now is because nobody cared enough to make it better. I may fail, I'll probably fail, but it won't be because I quit trying. Maybe my efforts will spur others into joining me, heck, I don't know. I do know that I've gotten several positive emails (and a few negatives) supporting my efforts and thanking me. That alone makes it worth it to me. The positives, that is. I use the ignore function to address the others.

Doesn't sound very open minded to refer to people as evil and yourself as good and to ignore any criticism and relish praise. Politics is life. You cannot discuss any topic at length without "politics" or "philosophy" creeping in. Why don't you start policing those who insert humor in threads which are not specifically marked humor or fun stuff? This thread is not marked fun stuff, no having fun in here!

I must be one of the rare few that still believe there is some good in Detroit - enough so that I bought a second home there a year ago when real estate was at its lowest. The market is still pitiful, but the area I bought in is not all that bad, and I do believe Detroit will rebound - eventually. I grew up there but moved away after high school. I still have in-laws there and some extended family. My wife and I stay in the home we bought when there to visit - her more than me. We've had zero issues with theft, buglary or vandalism to our property. So those that think you will be robbed blind anywhere in Detroit - it ain't so. Will I ever live there permanently - not likley as I have an extremely good job where I am. But if I could move my job there I'd consider it.

James, ... ... we can't see if a thread is marked political or not. It is ridiculous for you to think that all here should bow down to you ... ... and go out of our way to check, just in case you might happen to enter a thread. In fact, this is a free country and we have the right to free speech. I could see your gripe if you started a thread but this thread does not belong to you. Politics need not divide and detract. It is supposed to bring together and cause focus.
