Swapped a Pontiac SD4 engine in 84 SE. Using an Edelbrock intake manifold. Wanted to use a Holley carb 4 barrel but won't fit in present bay. Can another carb be used such as Carter AFB? Do I have to modify bay?

Welcome to the forum, I want to see pics.
Is the deck lid hitting the carb? If so the later years decklids have a hump, might be enough clearance. Or they can be cut and a rear facing scoop can be put on. Just some ideas.

I've got an 84/SD4 with a Holley 2 bbl.
I'm not surprised that the 4 bbl doesn't fit. I bought the smallest, shortest air filter that I could find, and it's still very close to the trunk wall.
I had to fabricate that clamp across the top because a regular stud was tall enough to hit the bottom of the decklid.
(I have the later decklid. The hump doesn't extend that far back.)

Fierosound has an 84 Indy with an SD4. He had an Edelbrock carb on it, at one point. Has a TBI on it now. I don't recall him having any fitment issues, but his engine mounts may have been different.
Do a search for his thread(s). I'd post links, but I have to go to work.

INDY now has Getrag 5-speed transmission and STOCK mounts positioning engine location.
(had issues with 4-speed automatic transmission front mount previously)

If I knew then what I know now - I'd go with the 2-bbl intake manifold and 2-bbl carb.
At the time, I didn't even know Edelbrock made a 2-bbl intake (4-bbl units were everywhere).
I also had a brand new Holley I had to get rid of because of the overhang of the fuel bowls.

Edelbrock/Carter carbs were a workable fit. Smallest Edelbrock is a 500 CFM 4-bbl. Carter had a 400cfm.
See here: https://www.fiero.nl/forum/F...3/HTML/000077-3.html

It's snug and very close to the trunk wall.

I chose not to mount an air cleaner directly on top (didn't want a "hot air" intake)

I could never get the 4-bbl working properly - always had a bog if you "punched it" - even with the 400cfm Carter.
So I took off the Carter carb., and have a FAST TBI on there now and am experiencing similar problems.

I'm thinking the 4-bbl/2-injector TBI has poor air/fuel mix properties sitting on a 4-bbl plenum.
It was intended for use with a 4-bbl to 2-bbl adapter on a 2-bbl intake manifold.
https://www.fiero.nl/forum/F...3/HTML/000077-5.html

It may also be that my BIG valve and camshaft grind combination are not conducive to low RPM transients.
Maybe I need a different camshaft? I have a different FAST 4-bbl/4-injector TBI I have yet to install and try.

On the Pace Car they modified the trunk wall for air cleaner clearance.

As I mentioned earlier - it's tight, but this fits without modifying engine bay.
It was a NOS 400 cfm Carter that cost me a fortune and am no longer using.
