guys I hate to ask cause it's been asked so many times on different forums but with the tiny fiero exhaust (shortend stock 3800 manis) how do you get rid of the terrible 3800 trumpet and rasp? It sounds so bad....
I have a Borla on my 3800 Series III in an 88 Mera and it sounds really nice, not loud, no rasp. It sounds powerful, like a sports car should, not like a hot rod. The only down side is you have to lose part of your trunk,
40474 Muffler Transverse Oval 3" In/ Dual 2.5" Out 19" x 5.5" x 10.25" MUFFLER ,3"IN SPLIT 2.5" OUT 19"x10.25"x5.5" OVAL TRANSVERSE

Borla as in Borla Pro XS mufflers? No res or cat?[/QUOTE]
Borla lists it as a Speciality muffler, part # 40474, you definitely hear the SC whine.
No res or cat, Comes out of the 3800 manifold, then 90 degree SS plumbing close elbow to a short flex joint to 2 of the same elbows to make a 180 turn into the muffler. I have Mera tail pipes on V band clamps.
Looks about like JCircs setup.
You can hear it a little in this clip from the 2015 LGGPR event.

JC I heard your white car on YouTube and loved the sound of it, quiet and all blower whine, what kinda muffler?
It's the Magnaflow 12267. Sounds nice outside and the quietest 3800 Fiero I've been in on the inside. If you check out page 3 you can hear wide open throttle from inside the car and also on the dyno. https://www.fiero.nl/forum/F...1/HTML/087461-3.html

Lol disregard the other comment, sounds tame especially considering mangaflows don't sound too good in Wbodies

Recently finished mine up, and it's pretty tame- I was actually hopping for more. Mine has a Magnaflow Cat, Thrush Muffler, and Hedmann Hot Tip resonators. Inside the cabin, it's almost non-existent. Behind the car, a nice sound, but not obnoxious. I have a cheapo DB meter, and idling it sits at about 75db. A Blip to 2500 takes it to 98 db. For reference, the stock Fiero 2.8 was at 82db idling, and 101 on the blip.
Don't know if that helps. More info available if you need it.

meyers got it right. I used a STOCK 1995 Z28 Muffler on Both of mine. Very "reasonably" quiet, But as Quiet as a Stock w body car... never going to happen, I've tried.

I'm sure that Meyers exhaust system performs great but that's a $1.200 job for an expert exhaust man. I take the easy way with a 3" U bend into a Spintech and dual 2 1/2" pipes out to Hot tips dual resonators. About $200.00 in parts. Its fairly loud but not deafening but I live with the sound as it's not my daily driver. Some owners like the roar while others do not. I enjoy the sound of horsepower.

I've only ever heard one 3800sc that I've liked the sound of. And that's the 3800sc that's in John Carlo's car (which is currently in transition). Blair up here in BC put this engine in and custom built the exhaust and it sounds beautiful. I have an autocross video here shot back in 2010. It was the first time that John had ever been on a track. He was nervous and was just taking it easy... but listen to his car!
The first Fiero (with no suspension ) in the video has a stock 2.8 in it, and then John goes for a cruise. You won't believe this is a 3800sc.
Click to view the video - HERE. (It should open in it's own window.) John's car appears at the 1:00 mark.
Guys I think JCirc's got the right idea with the magnaflows, it's nowhere near as a stock W but like someone already said I thought it was an impossible request too. His car isn't very loud at all and very minimal rasp, tolerable for sure!
Also guys I know the OE Z28 muffler is better, just don't wanna deal with shortening the trunk and all, if the Magnaflows work well without trunk cutting or having to shave off inches it'd be a great deal I think, John's car no doubt sounds better but JCirc's car also sounds tolerable with lots of whine and a pretty quiet exhaust, quietest I've heard out of any dyno video, especially considering no cat/res I'm very very impressed with the sound of the magnaflows!

mine is close to the loudness of a stock fiero. the system cost me close to 400 in total parts and i made it with help using a welder, sawzaw, and grinding wheel. if i can weld anyone can learn to weld. just dont look too closely at my work its pretty ugly.
I fought for a while to keep my trunk intact. I was able to get the Magnaflow cat + thrush muffler installed without affecting the trunk, but the muffler was an inch or so below the bottom of the cradle. Didn't want it to be the victim of a speed bump. I took out only a couple of inches of the bottom of the trunk, essentially making it flat at the bottom. Only lost the last couple of inches where it slopes at the bottom. This allowed the muffler to rotate enough to be above the cradle.
Cutting the trunk turned out to be pretty easy to do. Cut it off with a cut off wheel, and then sliced around the edge every 3", about 1/2" slice. I then folded these 3" slices up at a 90 degree angle toward the inside of the trunk. Made a sheet metal bottom that dropped in, resting on these slices. I pop riveted them together, but self drilling screws might work too. Even the carpet fit- just sliced it from side to side at the bottom, and then let it overlap itself at the bottom. I covered the outside of the trunk with heat protective material ( same stuff I used on the firewall), and also re-installed the stock Fiero Trunk heat shield. Even Fiero folks can't tell it's been cut unless I point it out.
As for the resonator tips, I tried an experiment last week. I tested the Db of the exhaust with and without them, and found only 1 Db difference in the loudness. Might help some in the tone of the exhaust, though.

That's what I refer to. The tone, the "trumpet and rasp". Which I call more of a slappy sound.
