The heading of the thread is "cone filter placement". I commented on the negative ramifications of placing a cone filter in the engine bay... where obviously people have located them. So what's the problem?

We do both Agree that a cone filter in the engine bay is counter productive and stupid, and Also I having a cone filter behind the 1/4 panel stated that also has a down side.

A cone filter can be fitted with a dust sock to prevent gross contamination of the cone media. It doesn't reduce airflow appreciably, is easy to remove and clean and extends the life of the cone filter.

My 4.9 Formula uses a K&N filter in the stock air box with the air/water separator replaced with Rodney's tube.
It looks bone stock and doesn't feature the giant sucking sound associated with a lot of CAI designs. The tube from the stock air box is a modified Camaro piece mated to the Cadillac collar and intake horn.

I draped a rubber mat across the bottom opening to reduce the crap kicking up.
The filter works fine and stays relatively clean.

From your picture, it looks like the mat blocks of the entire bottom of the opening in front of the wheel well liner.
Is it just the angle of the picture?
Where does it draw air from?

The original side vent is still there.
And the mat is not glued/sealed at all.

That's a good idea and I will give that a try. As we know as the airflow passes under the Fiero it then moves upward after the cabin, I was also thinking some sort of block under the filter should mitigate the dusty air.

Unfortunately the OP got banned so soon, but this is a very good tread that asks a legitimate question, perhaps it can be moved to technical? @Cliff There's great suggestions from oldjoe and fierosound!

I put my aftermarket filter in the position shown in "Fierosound's" post. It worked fine for the use that I made of the car. The drawback was the long length of intake pipe to get the air to the turbo at the back of the car. It took up too much space and would sag down onto the exhaust from time to time!
I've since just shoved the "cone filter" directly onto the turbo, right in the worst place for sucking in hot engine bay air, as everybody tells me!
My car is still the "fastest Fiero in France", even with sucking in hot air

I may try ducting cooler air one day but I don't want to get rid of my little trunk or put back the awfully big diameter intake tract piping.
To be honest, I don't think that there is a problem at WOT or at speed with the air around the engine; it's only at idle or when in town that the heat builds up enough to affect engine fonction. (I log my intake air temps so I know when it gets hot.)

Cheers,
Rafe

Here is where is my air KN filter lives, disregard that this it is shot and has been panted over ( it's been replaced)

Yup it makes a sucking sound on a cold start, but that Supercharger sound is godly
