I think without the illuminated Pontiac lettering, sales of the lenses would slow to a trickle. If there needs to be a work-around (peel-off tape, painted panels, etc) it would need to be pretty much perfect.

I ordered a set of stock ones for my 87 GT although the ones on it are the original and still intact, but they are going on 35 years old.

A while back there was a guy doing a custom design for his GT taillights...I did a simulation for him and he liked it...Don't know what became of him, tho...

Here is the design and the simulation I did to see how it would look; Maybe the lenses could be made with this design so GM can't throw a snit....
