4-speed flywheel.. (Page 1/1)

Is it normal to replace the flywheel or just clean it up and reuse ? I see some manufacturers don’t warranty the clutch with out replacing it.
Can’t see replacing it if the clutch material is organic. Figured I’d just replace the clutch, pressure plate, throwing bearing and piglet bushing since the motor is out.

There is no pilot bushing used in the Fiero. The clutch sets have other applications and that's why some sets come with a pilot bushing. The Fiero transmission input shaft is supported on each end within the case so there's no need for the pilot bushing.

I've never encountered a clutch that required a new flywheel. I use LUK clutch sets, and if the flywheel isn't burned or heat cracked, nothing is done to it.

When you order your clutch set, be sure to ask for one for an 85-86 4-speed. Should you get one for an 84, the clutch plate will work but it's smaller and will eventually begin to slip.

Ordered the LUK kit off Rock…. Thanks for the heads up on the pilot bushing. I’ll take a close look at the flywheel.
Appreciate this forum !

Flywheels don't wear evenly. "Cleaning it up" will not eliminate high and low spots. To ensure the replacement clutch disc engages to its full potential, and doesn't wear out prematurely, always have the flywheel resurfaced... or replace the flywheel.

It's a relatively big job replacing the clutch in a Fiero. You don't want to have to do it any more often than necessary.

Ditto on resurfacing the flywheel. Replace it only if it's below minimum thickness.

One thing to keep in mind, if its a V6, new flywheels for the 85-87 V6's are pretty much unobtanium. Those engines are externally balanced and its been a long while since that flywheel was available. Some parts suppliers will sell you an 88 flywheel but those engines are internally balanced so it won't work on the earlier engines without lots of vibration. If your flywheel is toast, best to go out to the mall for a good used replacement. If its a duke, don't know about those; Rockauto doesn't list a replacement in any event.
