Another YouTube fiero build! (late to the game but an interesting rescue of a 84) (Page 1/2)

Hello all

My name is Simon and I am rescuing a 1984 Fiero that has not run in my lifetime! Inspired by this forum and Mr. Finger I am on a quest to save this gem from the wreckers and make it my first car! Some interesting facts, this car is RUSTY! I live in Ontario Canada and we use salt on our roads. This car as suffered ALOT!

Did I check under the carpets in the trunk, nope. Did I check the upper frame rails, nope. Well I should have. Lets just say that this really should have been a parts car. But for several reasons I am not giving up. My Papa was a car guy, worked on the line for GM and taught me alot about cars, motorbikes and small engines. He passed away 2 years ago before I turned 16. He was a wiz at getting old beaters going and could fix anything. This build is for him.

The gentleman that I bought the car from was selling it after his bother passed away, it was an project that he never got to, so its for him as well. And I promised him a ride in the finished car

Oh and I have spent too much to turn back now!

So if you have a chance to check out my first video on YouTube I would appreciate it. Im not as slick as RF but Im having fun and I think you might enjoy following along.

Thanks for reading

Simon

I love the nose on these older cars. Good luck with the rebuild! I think the video format is a really good way to share your experiences with this, waiting for the next one!

Welcome and congrats! Looking forward to seeing more!

Tell us more about the car? Appears to be a base coupe or sport coupe? 5th character in the VIN would tell you (E for coupe, M for sport coupe). It also has the dealer-option sunroof. Are you going to turn it back to stock hard top, or do a full-size sunroof conversion?

My first car was also a red 84 Fiero I bought at your age, very similar.

Hope the rust isn't as bad as mine was. GOOD LUCK!

Since this is your first Fiero and also an unknown car, you need to do this FIRST. Remove the heater resistor and blower motor from the front compartment and make sure there are no mouse nests inside otherwise if you turn on the heater, the car can burn to the ground.

Here is a picture of a partially burned part that was caught in time. The circled areas are the resistor and blower motor.

This is in the front trunk area just above the spare tire. Remove the 2 items circled in yellow.

Good luck on the restoration. If the rear frame rails are not rusted through then it pays to begin a resto project. Pull the rear wheelhouse liners and look up there. Rust spots can be fixed but rust through requiring a frame section replacement will be a difficult fix.

Thanks for all the kind comments.
I have a question. Im working on my breaks, I replaced all the lines and calipers. Im now trying to bleed them, when I push the break peddle break fluid bubbles back into the master cylinder. Should fluid only flow out of the master cylinder? is this bad seals?

Thanks for any help

If you're seeing bubbles in the master cylinder when you press the brake pedal, that means there's still air in the lines. As you may have noticed when replacing the lines, the Fiero has a slightly different brake bleed order than most cars: Left rear, right rear, right front, left front.

Im seeing break fluid bubbling back into the master cylinder when I push the break, not just air bubbles. Should this not be a one way system, Check valve?

No that's normal, the fluid flows back and forth.

Did you bench bleed the master cylinder when you replaced the lines? If it ran dry or you replaced it, it needs to be bled by itself first (hoses from the two outputs into the reservoir, work in and out until no more bubbles, lots of videos online on how to do it). Good time to replace or rebuild it, the original rubber should be about shot.
