Is there anything from an 84 Indy Fiero I should keep before it goes to scrap? (Page 1/2)
Threedog DEC 01, 09:30 PM
I went looking for a bumper for my 87 GT and ended up finding an 84 Indy Fiero with an engine in the middle of a rebuild and a guy that wanted to get rid of it.

The interior was in pretty good shape and I LOVED the red (very 80s lol) so I kept that to swap over to mine (Steering wheel, panels, carpets, dash).

I am going to keep all the badges.

Is there anything else special about an 84 Indy that other people might want that would be hard to find on another Fiero? Not really wanting to make a profit, but I have no idea how special these things are and would hate to throw away a part someone else has been looking for.

Nearly all 84 wiring is only for 84.
Taillights are wired different and uses 2 more relays to have 6 brake/turn bulbs actually work.
Even wiper delay is different and unobtainable decades ago.

I'm told Throttle cable, TBI and other things are only 84 too.

Saving those is work but storing or shipping to X should be easy.

Likely some big items are 84 or Indy only but storing/shipping is harder.
Good steering column and rack is hard to find.

Example:
If don't want the trans cause too big...
save VSS and gear for stick cars. That should work in all stick cars.
For AT, save trans mounts and all brackets even if mounts are dead. Some people w/ later mono-mount might want them and "dead" mounts keep most peaces like nuts/washers in one place. (See my Cave, Torque Strut)

Saving some parts are iffy at best...
Windshields and plastic tank radiators are 2 of that class.

Note: 84 has Glass sail panels that you need to remove interior to get at panel hardware. Do Not try to pry them off w/o removing panel hardware.

Manual cars had a factory short shifter. Save that if it has it. I put one in my 88 and prefer it to the truck shifter it had.

Grab everything that makes the Indy an Indy…badges, rims, interior, air cleaner intake, etc. Someone will end up thanking you for them.

Thanks! The wiring was FILLED with splices everywhere, so I think that is shot. I may pull some other small harnesses off.

However, I will absolutely save some of their engine bay parts, are the valve covers unique? The air cleaner def was.

Unfortunately it was an automatic. I saved the shift knob as it is a unique color.

Does anyone know what the third center button on the overhead console is supposed to do? I have the performance sound middle control in my GT but that’s a slider.

How about the radio wire harness from the dash to the seats should be 4 wires dark & light blue, yellow, & brown. By chance the control/throttle cable from the cruise servo to throttle body?

I believe the 84 and 85 had 3 buttons. I think the center button operated all 3 and the others were for each side. I never owned an 84 but I seem to remember both my 85's had 3 buttons.

3 button dome shell just turns On center lights like the door switches.
Other two are "Reading Lights."

Most FSM and others docs still shows same 3 button setup but GM deleted them in later Fiero.
Also in my Cave, Sneak Path

Note: Have dome or reading lights On while driving is a bad idea to start and Illegal in many places.
