Is there a way to increase seat belt tension? (Page 1/1)
Kitskaboodle JAN 23, 09:44 PM
Has anyone on this forum figured out a way to increase seat belt tension?
I have had the covers off of mine a few years back but that was only to fully clean the seat belt fabric. It didn’t look like it was adjustable/serviceable. (while I had it apart)
Is there a way to adjust spring tension on an old belt? I would prefer this kind of a fix then pulling another set off a Fiero in the junkyard.
Thanks, Kit

Nothing to adjust them.

Dirt etc in the mechanism can cause tension and/or retraction problems.
Cleaning the web wrong can cause several things as web can get stiff or worse "cleaner" can weaken the web and fail in a crash.

As important as seat belts are I'd recommend sending them off for service.. there's some reputable services out there. I use SafetyRestore, they're very quick and semi-affordable for most folks @ around $100 a set.

Thanks for the info Steel.
However, I view this service just like I view wheel repair.
Good service if you have a very expensive and/or rare car
and want to keep it all factory correct.
However, at $82.99 per seat belt (seat belt repair + shipping $18.00)
that's just too expensive. I want to find a way to get them apart and
fix/adjust them or maybe it would be better to go aftermarket.

Thanks, Kit

A slight modification of Dodgerunnner's Fiero Belt Tensioner might do the trick.

Thank you for your safety concerns.
However, the fact that I’m bringing up a safety issue with the seat belts implies I want to fix/correct the problem. I think you are assuming here that I am not going to fix the problem or that I will simply “jury rig” it with bailing wire. I am committed to fixing the problem, just not by the very expensive method.
