So I am purchasing a Fiero 2.5 model with only 78k miles on it, nice underbody and everything. However I am having trouble understanding something about it. The title reads that it is an 88 but every body panel points toward 86 or older. Could it be titled wrong? Could it be a car that was heavily modded with a kit and a later owner decided to make it look like a Fiero again and put panels from an older model on it? Thoughts and ideas?

Could be a revin. Could be lots of things. Does the vin on the paperwork match the vin in the window? Does the vin in the window have rosette rivets? does that vin have 10th digit as a J? We would have to see pics of the suspension and engine (distributor particularly)
Edit: A photo from under the front of the car of the front crossmember + cooling pipes would put this to bed pretty fast too.[This message has been edited by skywurz (edited 02-10-2022).]

A) Check the VIN
B) Check the brakes- Are they Vented discs? Those were only on 88s (Although a lot of people mod the brakes)
C) Rear suspension has just ONE A-ARM on 84-87.....On 1988 Fieros there are three separate links; One trailing link, and two lateral links (Per side) (Once, again, some mod their early Fiero with an 88 rear suspension swap)
D) Front suspension subframe on early (84-87) there are two braces that mount diagonally from the subframe forward to the frame rails. On the 88s the subframe actually continues forward and attaches forward on the frame rails.
E) The early cars (1984-1986) that have your front facia have the VIN only on the plate under the left side of the windshield. The 1988 Fieros have the VIN on all of the body panels (Obviously, the front facia is from an older Fiero, but check the decklid and rear quarter panel for a VIN label) (And of course the VIN should match) (I am not sure of the 1987 Fieros as far as the VIN on Body panels situation)

The 87 had them too but because of how modified this is i would not bet on them. It has ribbed trim so whomever did this did a full front rear bumper replacement and did trim replacement (if it is in fact an 88) . Rear suspension alone would not say its an 88 as that can be swapped this is why i said check the front. Not many front suspension swaps done. I would also Check the door vin on the drivers side and look for a the small vin tag on the passenger door. Also look at the vin tag under the front hood with all the options.
Ive seen 1 88 revinned as an 87 it was missing all vin tags except one on the passenger door (it was an 88 vin that did not match the vin) other than that the options decal was correct the window vin was correct and had rosette rivets but the column vin had non rosette rivets..

On an '88, the front shocks mount inside the front springs. On older models, the front shocks are located beside the springs.

If it were mine, I would check the VIN on the windshield and all of the panels. Make a list. Check the VIN to the title. Check the VIN to the vin breakdown. Take a look at the body number plate as well....

Easy. Open the decklid. Look at the tops of the shock/strut towers. 88s have a single anodized ring around the hole where the strut pokes through. Has three holes for strut bolts. Earlier cars have three rectangular/oblong "washers".
This is an 88.

That is very true and easy to check- shoulda thought of dat.....
And Raydar...How about a new term for those washers; "Rect-o-Blong"........(Or maybe "Oblongular")

lets also not forget that the 88 rims are a little wider on the back than the front...

I was thinking "suppository-shaped". Or maybe not.

True, on Formulas and GTs. Base coupes have the same rims, front to back.
