Fiero store sunroof gasket (Page 1/1)
Kitskaboodle FEB 21, 09:31 PM
A number of years ago I was looking at a sunroof thread here on the Fiero forum and someone mentioned the reason that their new Fierostore sunroof seal made the sunroof glass sit too high was because it was installed backwards or upside down. It just so happens that I had installed the same seal on my 85 GT before I saw this thread and my sunroof glass also sits too high. I don’t have any water leaks but I do have lots of wind noise at any speed above 40 mph or so. I never did go back, pull out the sunroof seal and reverse it. I want to make the time to reverse it though by summer, if I did install it backwards and if this is the real reason for the extra height of the seal.
Your input on this?
Thanks, Kit

Wind noise and water leaks is often issues w/ SR hinges, the latch or both.

Tabs on glass is ½ of a hinge and bends etc so hinges stay a bit open.
Often gets bend just by people removing/installing the glass. Glass is heavy as is but pulling/installing glass is often a lot heavier for many because too short or "weak" w/ hands outstretch to properly do this job.

Latch can have several problems result is same...
The "ears part" where upper section hit lower section can bend. Made of "pot metal" and will break trying to bend it back.
Lower section can bend the roof at keyholes for "studs" bolts to.
Lower section can wear at pivot points to upper.
lower is adjusted wrong or above 1 or all act like that.

Kits, I did that on another owner's car and may have been one of those who posted about it. It didn't cure the reason for replacement. Leaks. Once I discovered the mistake, I removed and turned it around. I did install the full sunroof kit, including the tabs, buttons, and the plastic inserts that fit into the front edge of the roof. As I recall, the glass did sit a little higher, but it may be due to rubber that hasn't collapsed over the years like the OEM.

Because the install was for another, I don't know if there was wind noise, but it did stop the leaks. I once owned the car for a brief while, and I don't remember any noises. As I recall, the front of the seal has a lip that stands up against the front of the roof, while the rear is more flat. The lip stands up level with the top surface of the glass.

I read someplace that there is a yellow dot on the gasket and that this is to be installed on the latch side.

However, this is something I saw (I believe on here) and not sure how true it is.

This fiero store sunroof gasket, it replaces the entire factory gasket ? So it shows outside where my pencil is pointing too ?

Yes, the gasket {weatherstrip} shows outside of the body.

I'm glad this has be brought up again.

In 2008, I had my sunroof hardware replaced entirely with a NOS GM sunroof seal. It came in a GM box.
Plus it had the green mark on the seal meaning that the rear part indicator. (some can get confused)

I had TFS tracks, and the all the hardware replaced thinking I was doing the best choice.

After fooling around with adjustments, and I did notice the front hinges TFS reproduced their coating
was coming off. I called TFS to ask them about it, and they knew their first batch was not that great.
They honoured and set me a replacement pair.
At the time, the button fasteners didn't have a sponge seal to them either. TFS corrected that, after I bought
another kit. It just leaked because naturally there was no seal area.

So, my sunroof seal leaked at the rear. I removed the latch handle spacer IIRC.
To pull it down more. Today, It's better.
The picture in this thread with the pencil showing a upper rear corner pushing upwards is what I have also.
It's possible that the NOS GM seal was made thicker. Its hard to say because the original was over 20 years old.
I want to try back the original front hinges just to see if there is a difference.
But, after 16 years, those sunroof tracks are now rusted out.
Sometimes its better to leave original parts alone if everything is ok.
Think I was doing things for the better, actually mad things worse.
Wind noise is still there.
