My 87 4 banger is running a fever (Page 1/1)

Hey guys / gals.. my 87 Iron Duke is running hot.... I just installed a new water pump , and once she heats up, it starts blowing out hot coolant from the plastic overflow tank up front. There are no leaks anywhere, so I cant figure out why shes blowing steam and fluid from there. I'll pull over, refill the system, then she seems to run fine for quite a while. Shut the car off, restart and drive, and the whole precedure happens again. Any recomendations of a fix ? I live in Georgia, and soon it will be getting very hot here. I need to stay cool...THX

Sounds like air in the system. Did you purge the system of all air after refilling the coolant?

See my Cave, Coolant Fill, Thermostat and Radiator Caps

Even if that solve you problem now, Replacing WP often knock crap loose that plugs up the heater loop etc.
Do Not remove or disconnect the connection under the intake manifold before buying a new part.

When working on the heater outlet, Cover the DIS Brick!
Coolant can short out the coils and ICM.

I dont believe I " burped " the system good enough. i will read your post on the proper procedure and do it this weekend. Thanks alot for the links.

Personally I just filled the front up, filled the rear up and then drove a couple miles, and then topped off from the rear, and I repeated that until the level didnt change.

Leave the front radiator cap open. Fill with coolent from the engine fill pipe. Keep filling until coolant begins to flow out of the radiator inlet. Put radiator cap back on. Refill from the fill pipe again. Put fill cap back on. Start engine and run it for on;y a few minutes. Shut down engien, open fill cap and pour more coolant until full. Now drive the car a short distance and wait for the engine to completely cool down. When cold open the fill cap again and fill to capacity.

System should/will "burp" itself.
May take More then 1 heat cycle to do that even when you fill the system right.

You often causes more problems trying to "burp" the system by opening either cap repeatedly.

But Keep checking Overflow tank level next few drives...
If check when cold... treat add mark as about "full" mark or when normal hot can overflow the tank.
Fill the tank first few drives if needed so rad can't suck air when cools down.
When I do this after flush etc. fill O-tank about 1/2 between add and full the first time and Maybe add a little more after heat cycling.

O-tank like AT oil need to check level when system is Hot.

If tank level never drops after 1 to a few heat cycles... the Rad cap or tank tube or other parts leak air in even tho may not leak coolant out.

You got it Dennis... did pretty much what you said and now Im running cool as a cucumber . I've talked with you before... thanks again... and with a Fiero... till next time, of course .
