Has anyone ran aluminum bushings on their 88 front suspension? (Page 1/1) |

I'm trying to make my Formula 'Tighter' like the pre-88 cars. Currently it sits on poly everything, WCF coilovers in the rear, and WCF lowering springs up front.
The 'updated' and 'comfortable' feel of the 88s is what I'm trying to get away from, I've modified pre-88s, and loved the way they drove. This car, not so much.
I'm not looking for the 'but the 88 is better' argument. I simply don't enjoy the feeling of it as much, and want something that feels 'rougher'.
I already tried trading it for a pre-88 car, but, my car is mint, and I was only really offered junk, so, I'm sticking with the car.
I'm curious if aluminum bushings on the entire suspension would help give the car a more 'go-kart' feel, and more feedback from the road.
Anyone know if that'll work?------------------ Every normal man must be tempted, at times, to spit upon his hands, hoist the black flag, and begin slitting throats.

Well from my experience, aluminum would beat the crap out of you. Even full on race cars, at least none of mine in years past, have I done do that with exception of the cradle bushings.
Peace,

I was worried about that. Part of me thought it was a bit extreme.
Are you aware of any other modifications I could do, to make the ride tighter, but not as bad as all solid?
Perhaps there is a sway-bar upgrade for 88s?
Maybe even just do the sway bar end link bushings solid?
Running out of ideas haha.------------------ Every normal man must be tempted, at times, to spit upon his hands, hoist the black flag, and begin slitting throats.

I've had the same experience with my '84 and my Formula. My modified '84 felt great at autocross. I just didn't like the lack of power. So I modified my Formula's suspension, similar to what I did with my '84, and I was never really all that satisfied with it. More power, yes, but it just didn't seem as nimble. I've concluded it's because the weight of the duke is less than the 2.8, and therefore it's this added weight in the back of the Formula that "ruins" the handling.

Well, in my case, my 85GT, full suspension, poly everything, sway bars, lowered, etc, all done right, with quality parts, and as 3800SC was the best handling car I've had.
My formula has an aluminum V8, that weighs less than a 2.8 and is still garbage lol------------------ Every normal man must be tempted, at times, to spit upon his hands, hoist the black flag, and begin slitting throats.

"I'm trying to make my Formula 'Tighter' like the pre-88 cars."
Never heard that one before. For you to think that I would guess there's something worn out in your suspension.Comparing a worn out 88 suspension to a poly non-88 is really not a fair comparison. Poly vs poly or worn vs worn, the 88 wins easily IMO (and in every 80s car magazine I ever read)

Can Skip the cradle bushings as doesn't matter to anyone w/ 88. Doesn't matter to many others w/ 84-87.
But Solid bushings for control arms etc beating the driver isn't only problem... Expect to Break suspension parts and without Warning.
Even a small hole in the road = a Big Sledge Hammer Impact to the suspension and Bushing flex and compression eat most of that force hundreds to thousands times a day. Polly is a joke but Even they compress to eat Impacts from crossing RR tracks, hitting any size potholes and worse protecting Ball Joints and everything else.
When suspension breaks because some fool drove with solid bushings of any type... bearings to replace bushings are same thing. Better have a good lawyer on speed dial when Car Insurance co voids the policy and others sue you for hitting people and other things.------------------ Dr. Ian Malcolm: Yeah, but your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn't stop to think if they should.
