New Fiero Owner - Again!! (Page 1/1)
88FormulaDuke APR 21, 12:49 AM
Greetings!

I’ve had a few Fieros over the years, but it’s been probably 15 years or so since I sold my last one. An ‘88 GT 5-speed. You dummy. My other ones were both ‘86 V6’s, one auto, one 4-speed.
But I got the bug again (gas prices helped) and found an ‘88 base model, Iron Duke.
I’m gonna use her to as GM originally intended, mostly as a commuter, as my other DD is a Ford F-150, I love it, but it gets about 12-14 around town.
I’ve been finding parts here and there to essentially replicate a Formula, handling wise, but with the economical and simple Duke.
These are cars I’ve always been fond of, even after all these years. They used to be easier to get in-and-out of though…

Here she is when I took delivery, the previous owner was an 18 year old kid, it was his first car. I thought he was gonna cry when I took off!
Back in the day I had an 86 2M6 SE and kept the spoiler when I sold it. I’ve had it all these years and was the first thing I added. Still needs paint, though. I’ll post more pictures as time goes on.
It’s an auto now, but plan on swapping it for a 5-speed. a) more fun, and b) better mileage.

Cheers all!!
Anyone in the Chicago area got a 5-sp for sale? Lol!

(I hope the pix come out, all I see is a huge web browser address…)

Welcome back to the obsession!
Nice ride! Good luck with your tranny swap. I've done two of them. Quite do-able, but a PITA.

There is lots that can be done with the base 88 car. Here's mine.

The suspension was completely worn out when I got it. One of the ball joints even rattled after I removed it.

Nice ride! Between the time, cost and hassle of doing a 5 speed swap, not sure you will come even close to breaking even with the slight fuel savings, but who knows.. But I agree that 5 speed is more fun to drive, especially if you are not driving in a city most of the time.

Welcome back!

I've done the auto to manual swap. Worthwhile I think.

The 88 Fiero Duke had a 5 speed Isuzu transmission. I take it that you have a blown transmission? Its not a high demand item but only used on Fieros as a light duty transmission for a short time. If you find one it should be at a fair price . I also believe that Midwest Transmission can rebuild them.
While the base models with the Duke engine haven't been my choice, they have always sparked my curiosity. An 88 Fiero base model with the Duke engine in good shape has reported to be capable of close to 50 hwy mpg. That is equal to some of the best mileage figures of new cars.
It makes for an attractive purchase of a collectible in a period of exorbitant fuel prices and that sounds like your plan. Good luck with it.
