Both sides stick out. I know they had that black tacky glue on them before. What can I use to replicate it so they are still removable in the future? I thought about some cement on the inside, but once that’s on I imagine it will never come off. I tried double sided tape but it won’t hold it up it’s not thick enough for the inside.

Probably use black silicone. You can still remove them with a little effort but they won't be permanent.

I used a blob of 3/8" butyl tape from the roll I bought to reassemble the tail light housings.
This is also the stuff used in the front compartment as sealant around the A/C tubes to evaporator.

This is exactly what I used for mine as well.

There is also a hole in the support behind the sail. Some people have drilled a small hole and put in a Christmas tree clip.

I actually used a couple of the small hex-head screws that have a washer- hardly notice them. (I converted my 85 SE V6 (notchy) to 86-88 GT rear bodywork...So not stock in any way)

I have had my quarter panel trim pieces out several times and I seem to recall that the top of the trim piece fits inward and upward and is mostly held in by the lip on the quarter panel. Could it be that you don't have it fully installed?
