2.5 ‘88 Stalls Only On StartUp (Page 1/1)

The past few weeks my duke stalls on start up. Usually when you shift gear. It idles high initially around 1500. Trying to rev it won’t save it. It will restart. It usually stalls 1-3 times, and then is fine. Runs great, idles where it should, and drives great.

Earlier this year, I was having issues where the car wouldn’t restart when hot and just would crank. I never actually got to the bottom of that one as it’s not done it since the few times this spring.

Anyway, I’m annoyed to have to keep starting it. What would cause it to stall like this?

Sadly Can be several things... and maybe more then just one thing.

Examples:
Iffy wiring, relay(s), etc. Replace the pump and ECM fuses even if test or looks good.
See my Cave, Vac Leaks
Iffy Fuel Pressure. Need a gauge set and tool. https://www.fiero.nl/forum/Forum2/HTML/146121.html TBI Test Adaptor for Duke etc.
Iffy ECM not "turning on" the injector. I'd say need an injector noid light to test ECM but may not help because can drive before it happens.

Note:
From a cold start, any w/ engine temp < 100°F, then ECM may keep Idle higher then normal. Colder like in winter then may keep Idle very high first few miles.
ECM will ignore you to hit a gas pedal trying to get normal idle.

The oil pressure switch has seen better days. So far so good.

And wasn't leaking oil w/ sender that bad? Check the dipstick.

88 sender can go bad/dead but most fail w/o blowing apart.
Unlike early units that fail and very often leak oil trying to empty the pan.

That & F-pump relay are wired parallel and bad sender should not stop/stall the engine.

Unplug the sender and see if pump primes and stay on w/ engine running.
If not then relay, wiring or ECM have problems.
Quick test: Switch AC Clutch and Pump relays.

Carefully take dead sender apart and take pictures. Doubt any has seen them apart or have picture if did.
