Fuel filler hose cracks - how are yours? (Page 1/1)
Kitskaboodle OCT 16, 07:02 PM
Over the last two weeks I have been working on both my Fiero’s underneath. (they are both in my driveway on car ramps)
Anyways, while under my 86 GT, I happened to notice that the fuel filler hose that goes to the filler tube neck has some small cracks in the outer rubber sleeve just before it goes over the filler tube. Because it’s a fuel hose, it is reinforced with wire mesh/braiding in the rubber. On mine the rubber has started to split and you can see the wire mesh underneath. My 85 GT has some splitting in the same exact hose in the same exact spot. (only it’s not as bad) As an fyi these hose assemblies came from the FieroStore. As I recall when I bought them, these are the AC Delco factory hoses. Admittedly, I pulled the gas tanks out of both cars a good 8-10 years ago or more (to replace the fuel pump) but I’m still a little surprised at the cracks, (in the rubber outer layer) especially on my 86 GT. I have already ordered another fuel hose assembly from the FieroStore to replace my 86’s hose.

This is in no way a rant against the FieroStore fuel hose assembly but rather a warning that (the next time you are under your car, to check your fuel hose assembly (and see if yours has developing cracks) and if so, that you consider changing yours out before yours start to leak and/or vent fumes.
Thanks, Kit

Fuel Filter are "Flare Nuts" on Metal Lines that have Viton O-rings to seal the joints.

Do Not use normal rubber even if look same black rings. Do Not over tighten as nuts and metal they touch have nothing to seal but can wreck the tubes and sealing area in the filter.

If you mean 3 rubber sections that goes between tank/pump assembly and rest of car...
Feed is J30R9 High Pressure Hose. Return and EVAP Vent can be J30R7 Low Pressure hose but many use R9 just so is same type.
Feed is 3/8", others are 5/16" there. Can get at many local auto parts stores.

While GM and others use "worm screw" hose clamps...
For high pressure feeds, best clamps are ones like these...

Even second is still a "worm screw" the small shield prevents slots cutting the hose.
Do Not over tighten and use 2 clamps at each joint for Feed line.

Last year, after my first fill-up of the season, I smelled gas.
It seems my 1-1/2" filler hose developed a small crack in it and was seeping gas.

Not my pic, but I saw something similar when I got under the car.
It's a tight squeeze to work in when you aren't dropping the tank.

I wanted to fix this fast and only needed the larger hose (not the Fiero Store 2-hose part)
You need to buy 1-1/2" ID fuel filler hose elbow (cut to fit) that you can buy anywhere.
I had my car fixed the same day.

Just replaced mine. I did my fuel pump and noticed they had damage so the car sat till the new ones arrived. O'reilly's wanted $65 for the Gates #24715.

Sorry for above post.
I didn't notice had screen zoom set small and read Filter not Filler....

⚠️ On the big filler hose... do not over tighten the clamps. Very easy to do exactly that and wreck them.
More so w/ Wire type clamps on many filler and radiator hoses.

I use 1/4" drive sockets and where possible use a "nut driver" handle to limit force. If have to use a normal ratchet handle only need you fingers to turn.
I replace any clamps that isn't hex head because screw drivers often slips and damage the hose where you can't see.
(Some clamp have "Guards" to keep screwdriver in place but most don't.)

To get the filler vent line off easier...
