Plastic impeller? Not! (Page 1/1) |

I ordered two water pumps for my 85 & 86 GT’s from Rockauto. They had the Gates brand for $28.00 so I ordered two. When they arrived I noticed the quality was outstanding but……the impeller was plastic. Before I bought them, I checked the “Info” section and it clearly stated the impeller was cast iron. Anyways, I returned them back for a refund. I know some of you will point out the old disclaimer that the manufacturer has the right to “make changes without notice” and I understand that. But I’m still going to return any water pump that has a plastic impeller. Or as I like to call them, “the water pump from hell”.
So here is where you can help me: Buy a Fiero V6 water pump lately that had the metal or aluminum impeller? If so, what brand? Thanks, Kit

I bought a Duralast earlier this year. All metal. But because it was for an 87 it didn't include the nipple for the heater bypass like the 85 and 86. I just checked and te 85 and 86 list the same pump so you would need to salvage the nipple from your old pump.
O'Rielly has one that includes the gasket and nipple but the description doesn't tell what impeller. Another doesn't have either nipple or gasket but has a cast iron impeller.

The Fiero Store has them, also...Still, I would CALL to make sure it has a steel impeller.

Had several vehicles negatively affected due to a plastic impeller failing over the years... the motor spins, but the impeller...Not. So. Much. [This message has been edited by TheDigitalAlchemist (edited 12-08-2022).]

Is eight years ago close enough for "lately"? I bought a Cardone Select Part # 5513114 water pump for my Formula. Metal impeller, and came with the timing cover clamp.

Thanks, Patrick. I forgot to mention the clamp. Most pumps today don't come with the clamp. Lisle Tools and KD Tools makes the timing cover clamp for the GM 60* V6 engines, but I found that a small amount of metal has to be ground away to make it work.
A couple of pictures of the clamp in this link. http://www.gafiero.org/bbs/...x.php?topic=4145.105

Same here. Duralast from Autozone; metal impeller. I bought it about seven months ago.
A few months later, I removed the Duralast pump and replaced it with a AC Delco pump, which also had a metal impeller (long story there).

Thanks for all the replies. By the way, you may ask why I don’t call Rockauto to confirm before I place my order? Well, Rockauto has changed their ways (about customer service that is) because it is now near impossible to call them on the phone. Kit
