1988 Fiero 2.5l How to change oil - the O-ring placement (Page 1/1)

This might seem like a really dumb question, but here it goes…
Changing the oil for the first time in my 1988 Fiero 2.5 liter 4 cylinder.

Never did and oil change on an engine like this.
I got the giant oil plug off, and no O-ring.
I used pliers to pull out the oil filter cartridge, and it came out along with a giant O-ring.

So putting this back together, where does this large O-ring go?

After pushing in a new cartridge, do you put the large O-ring up against the filter cartridge?

Or

Do you put the large O-ring around the threads of the oil plug cap, pushing it to seat against the oil cap?

I first put the O-ring up against the filter cartridge, and it seems to have disappeared.

I can pull the filter cartridge to get the O-ring back, but I been searching for this, and only come across the 6 cylinder fiero oil change.

This is so basic, but I am stuck.

It would seem like the large O-ring goes around the cap threads to seal the cap against the oil pan, but it did not come apart like that.

That’s great!
It goes how I thought
Around the large oil cap threads, then seats on the oil cap flange.
So when I screw the large oil cap back on, it seats against the oil pan.

I find the factory service manuals and parts catalogue very helpful for trouble shooting and repair.
There's some generic stuff that doesn't necessarily apply to Fieros, but they're the most comprehensive manuals.

Oil Filter....
Lisle make/made a tool to remove stuck filter cover. https://www.lislecorp.com/s...n-plug-wrench-for-gm
Dorman make/made new filter covers.

Fiero and Other FSM...
Be careful w/ them. Don't blindly trust many things in GM books, even less for 3rd parties like Haynes.
Between FSM and 22P errors there are many parts listed as fitting 87 and 88 4Cyl Does Not Work because many are for 86 and older that are not same engines when you really look.
Only shares some parts.

That’s scary to have to be cautious on a GM Factory Service Manual.
I can understand on the Haynes, but thanks for the heads up on the GM manuals.

The problems w/ GM and likely other FSM are because "authors" do things like Copy/Past pages or whole sections and never check the data is actuate for the past copy.
Examples:
84 - 86 Fiero FSM rear Brakes section copy/past is from another modem and images don't match the real word looking at Fiero. Only 87 Fiero FSM got that fixed.
Dash lights "map" in all Fiero FSM are missing some Bulbs. See https://www.fiero.nl/forum/Forum2/HTML/138175.html

Some times GM will publish a fix page(s) but nearly no-one sees them not even GM dealers because is "burred" in Tech Service Bulletins. TSB are available to the Public in different ways but never looked at them. I never saw an update for either Examples above thru TSB.

While seems Dorman and Lisle don't make X now but maybe find thru Eflay, flea markets, etc.
