I have been reading the book All Corvettes are Red. Based on the things that went on with the Corvette it is not likely the Fiero would have lived much longer even if the second Gen had been built.
The money issues got really bad and the Camaro/ Trans Am was delayed a few years and the Cirvette was put on permanent hold for the 5th Gen.
This was much like the Fiero being canceled before it was finally approved.
What was interesting was the Corvette 5th gen was hidden from the GM leaders much like the Fiero was. They hid it and continued to quietly work on it. It took 7 years to get things approved. Even then people paid for the hiding with their future at GM.
In this time cars like the W body was losing $5000 per car. Things were bad and sports cars 3ven as supported like the Corvette were not safe.
I recently purchased a 5th gen to go with my Fiero and I am finding much about the 5th gen leads back to the Fiero. The lead designer was Fiero designer John Cafaro. The interior designer was John Albert Fiero I D package designer.
The 5th gen used a space frame and could be driven with no body. The panels were bolt in. A quarter panel can be changed in an hour. There are just things I find that remind me of the Fiero. The body panels are the came materials not Fiberglass.
But after reading how bad things got at GM it is amazing the Corvette survived. I thought the Fiero had a tough development the corvette was every bit as bad.
The bad blood between Camaro and Chuck Jordon was wicked and Jordan was just a hot headed mad man.
I would recommend anyone who is a GM fan to read this book. This story like the Fiero is very telling of the toxic culture at GM in that era. It is amazing they lasted till 08 before they needed bailed out.
Yes I am keeping the Fiero. It will always remain. I just wanted a nice red Corvette convertible for years and the Gen 5 prices have bottomed out and are in the way up. Good clean examples are still available.
Also it is the last analog vette so it is easy to work on and modify. It also is a very hood drive and solid car. Even 22 years old it has no rattles.
Anyways The Fiero would have had a tough time living long in this era.

I really enjoyed reading "All Corvettes are Red"...Great book about a really amazing development program for the 5th gen Vette.
One thing that was really important to the 5th gen; Instead of gathering Corvette owners and asking "What would you change?" ("NOTHING!!! We love the Vette the way it is!!!") They gathered 911 owners, Supra owners, etc and then had them test drive a C-4 and then asked them what they liked- and more importantly, what they did not like. The stupid frame-rails that made it impossible to get in and out, the tiny trunk, the "Hard as Rock" Suspension and the visibility problem (The C-5; You can see the road TWENTY FEET closer to the car because of the lowered hood-height)

If I ever buy a Corvette, it'll likely be a C6. The styling just spoke to me, the first time I saw it. The curves of the fenders reminded me of the 63-67, in profile.
Going to Amazon, to check out that book. Thanks for the recommendation.

I ended up on the C5 mostly because it is on the new platform that the C5-7 uses. Also it is the last analog Corvette. This makes mods and repairs much easier and cheaper to do.
I also focused on the 02-03 as they are the most sorted of all the C5.
The prices of the C5 also are on the way up while the others are still going down. Also I am a sucker for hide away head lamps.
For what I paid and what I got there is no better value.

Love the C5s. My favorite combo is the yellow with black interior black convertible with the HUD. Just drooly!!!!

There is one problem with yellow Vettes. In the spring the bugs are all over them.
Even my sons small battery Vette attracted bugs like crazy in the spring.

I'm not sure I understand that comment.
Got my book a couple days after ordering it. It's quite good. It's truly a wonder that anything got done at GM.

What is meant that the car is still more basic when it come to computers. GM also used mass air flow and the C5 is much easier to do modifications to.
Like the electronic suspensions. You can shut them down up to 2003 with a tech tool or simulators. 2004 and later you are stuck with it.
Tuners love the C5 as it is easy to do things on when later cars have more issues.
