Going to drive from Alabama to Arizona this weekend in my '88 Formula.

It's running great but I have never taken it on a long trip so fingers crossed!

No cruise control unfortunately

Never travel long distance in a Fiero without a….
1) Spare ICM
2) Basic tool kit
3) Credit card
4) start looking for a gas station at 1/3rd tank.

I took a 2750 mile trip and didn't take a spare tire. Took along a small tool kit. No spare ICM (distributor eliminated for a more dependable 7730 conversion). Started looking for a fuel stop at 160 miles on the trip odometer (fuel gauges aren't dependable).

Also took along a seat cushion. Butts get awful sore after sitting in our old hardened seats for hours on end.

All good advice. I've got the spare ICM and tools. A cushion would be a good idea!

I'm a bit worried about the fuel pump, not sure why, I guess because I have never changed it and don't know how old it is.

Leaving in the morning, I'll post what happens!

I'm about to roll up 200K miles on my 87. I never ran it below 1/4 tank when the gauge was reasonably accurate, and now I usually don't go beyond 160 miles on the odometer. This keeps the pump submerged in fuel that keeps it cool. On another car that had an accurate fuel gauge, I let it run out of gas. It immediately killed the fuel pump.

If you haven't done so yet, determine your mpg. Fuel up by manually holding the nozzle at low flow. When it cuts off, don't add any more fuel. Set the trip odometer and around 120 miles, refuel using the same method. Divide your gallons into your miles. That way you can determine how far you can get on not more than 9 gallons before refilling. Always use the slow fill method for consistency even when driving locally.

Made it to Oklahoma City!

Drove great until there was a stoppage on I40 due to an accident. I was sitting there watching it get hotter and hotter until I finally pulled off to the side as the radiator fan is not working. I haven't had time to diagnose it so I just waited till it cooled a bit and traffic was moving at least 10 mph and I hit the road again. Is there a fuse for the fan? I can't remember.

I'll look into it more tomorrow as I know it was working a few days ago.

Other than that it was smooth sailing. Averaging 29.6 mpg at about 75-80 mph. Ac works great.

Meeting a friend for breakfast tomorrow then I'll continue on to AZ.

Keep us posted and post some pics!!!!!!

Make sure your Tstat is opening and closing, check fan fuse. I actually put in a switch to make sure i could turn t on whenever I was in traffic.

Made it to Scottsdale! 1688 miles.

Fun trip overall, especially the last part, coming down the mountains from northern AZ to the valley. Fun road!

Averaged 28.2 mpg, the whole last day was a stiff quartering headwind of at least 20 mph that kind of blew the average.

Oil pressure at 2700 rpm was 40 once everything was hot. 10w-30 fresh change. Is that average?

The rad fan is still not working. I checked the relay and it works fine. Good ground, good hot lead, it just isn't getting a signal from either the temp switch or the AC switch. Any ideas?

Didn't really take any pictured during the trip, in kind of a hurry, but here's my car afterward. Lots of bugs gave their lives trying to stop me!
