Hey,all. An interesting Haggerty article today mentioned Smokey Yunnick and his tinkering with a Fiero. And I quote,
"One bonkers example of Yunick’s ingenuity can be found in a most unlikely car: a four-cylinder Pontiac Fiero. Yunick fitted that car with a complex system that used coolant to manage the temperature of the fuel-air mixture and paired it with a temperature-controlled turbocharger. Duly equipped, the Fiero’s much-maligned Iron Duke four made 250 hp and reportedly achieved 51 miles per gallon. Yunick’s patents for the technology are public domain, but he took some of its secrets to the grave."
Does anyone know about this and what the system consisted of?

Roughly, double the fuel economy and 2-1/2 times the HP. Where have we gone wrong? [This message has been edited by Mike in Sydney (edited 05-28-2023).]

I had the pleasure of meeting the man who owned the Smokey Yunick Fiero at the time. Because there was so much debate as to whether Smokey was again blowing smoke, we arranged to have it brought to the Fiero Factory Swap Meet so it could be seen and driven as there was so much debate about the car's capabilities. Eric Schneck (Boomtastiac Racing) was selected to drive the car and write an exclusive article for The Georgia Fiero Club. I believe Ed Parks went along for the ride as a credible witness. These are articles from Circle Track Magazine and Eric's test drive.

In all the years we've had this on our website, we've never noticed the error in Smokey's birthdate. Eric Schneck http://www.gafiero.org/docs/smokey.shtml

Smokey Yunick was a promoter, attention getter but also an innovator. In his racing days he was known as a cheater that made illegal and hidden mods that helped him win races. I believe that his hot vapor engine did provide good performance and gas mileage but 250HP from a Duke sounds very optimistic. The block, crank and rods on a stock 2.5L engine won't take that kind of horsepower very long but might it have been SD equipment? Apparently the engine fueling was a "draw through" the turbo design. The hot turbo most likely vaporized the liquid gasoline to a gaseous state but I'm not sure how detonation was controlled. Having not driven the vehicle I can't prove or disprove the claims Smokey made for it but will just say that they are very interesting.------------------ " THE BLACK PARALYZER" -87GT 3800SC Series III engine, custom ZZP /Frozen Boost Intercooler setup, 3.4" Pulley, Northstar TB, LS1 MAF, 3" Spintech/Hedman Exhaust, P-log Manifold, Autolite 104's, MSD wires, Custom CAI, 4T65eHD w. custom axles, Champion Radiator, S10 Brake Booster, HP Tuners VCM Suite.
