What a difference a new air filter makes! (Page 1/2) |

Just wanted to share my experience after (finally) replacing the air filter. The air filter hadn't been changed in at least 20 years or so. And since I live near the beach and everything is always covered in sand, I was expecting a clogged up air filter. Much to my surprise it wasn't. At all. And the new air filter made no difference whatsoever... 😐
I was really hoping I would regain some of the performance I've lost over the years, but alas...
That said, please don't take this post as a "changing air filters is unnecessary" rant. It just didn't make any difference in my specific case.

Cliff- I am sure that you know that the Fiero air filter flows inside to outside, so the "Dirt" would be on the inside of the filter (Kind of hard to see)

I replace most of my sensors after 38 years and that did make a difference. I forgot how well the car used to run.

Only for V6 Fiero.------------------ Dr. Ian Malcolm: Yeah, but your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn't stop to think if they should. (Jurassic Park)

Anyone who believes it would apply to the duke as well shouldn't be allowed to pick up a wrench.

Of course, there's the ugly possibility that when the PCV/breather recall was done to your GT, that the original hose connection to your air filter canister was never properly plugged... and unfiltered air has been entering the "filtered" section of the canister all this time... effectively bypassing the air filter element.
I'm only half-kidding about this. This has been an actual issue with many V6 Fieros. Seriously!

Age of the filter is not the primary factor. It’s how dirty it is. The thickness of the coating of dirt, debris, sand, leaves, grit, etc. will determine how much air restriction is caused.
My filters are 10-15 years old but…,.I’m a K&N kind of guy. 😀. Clean it in kerosine, re-oil it and back in it goes. K&N gauze filters are on all my cars. Kit

Brands ike K&N are washable and require to be re oiled to work even in the canister style some require maintenance all require it done a lot more often eg: each year.
