Just so we're all on the same page... are you referring to the decklid grills?

I'm planning to modify my motor decklid grills (. a.k.a. vents) but not the rubber seals.
The grills/vents are a two part 'sandwich' and I'm planning to replace the lower grill which are riveted to the upper grill.
I'm still hunting for the 'best' replacement of the lower grill which will still hold tree leaves, but easier to clean than the factory grills.

Vents have a "seal"/Flap only on the front to keep out big crap getting thru the gap for the panel and rear glass.
Notchies have Three panels only two are vents. 84 has blank panels. 85-86 has vents to hex screens below attach w/ clips. 87-88 has vents w/ mod'ed upper to slotted metal below attach by "rivets."
Either let crap thru. Later avoids UV getting thru "Rotting" the EVAP Canister etc.
If have to park under trees etc.... Both helps w/ leaves but not pine needles and other small crap. Likely can get smaller screens like window screen for home but fine grate has problems too if not cleaned often. Even they will hate pine needles and related.------------------ Dr. Ian Malcolm: Yeah, but your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn't stop to think if they should. A bit of Armor All applied... and as good as new!
You might look into what people have tried for the decklid seal.

quote | by Spoon in Aug-16-2021: You may have to fabricate something. Try a Home Depot or similar place and walk thru the doors & windows section. Ask a willing subject to show you the rubber seals for weather proofing. Take the vent along and tell them what you're trying to accomplish. Don't forget the rivets. |

I just recently painted the rear vents on my 85 GT and I noticed the rubber seal/strip on mine is missing some rubber at the leading edges. What I also noticed (and nobody has mentioned it thus far) is that the rubber is starting to get gooey. Guess that’s what happens after 37-38 years of being out in the weather. 😕 Kit
