Is there a current list of those who do Fiero engine/trans swaps? I did see an older thread about it (2015) but that’s way too outdated. I know there is West Coast Fiero but who else? If I do decide to do it, the plan is to go L67SC / 4T60 auto. Yes, I’m in California so it’s going to be a MoFo getting it smogged and registered. Thanks, Kit[This message has been edited by Kitskaboodle (edited 07-24-2023).]

Years ago, I was interested about an engine swap in a '84 Chevy, but California's laws influenced me to go 'stock'.
GOOD LUCK!

Curly (Madcurl) who used to be on here did a Cadillac swap and had his registered as "special construction". The only issue is that whatever engine you use, everything else has to be used. In this photo, he has only 1 exhaust because the Cadillac only had 1 exhaust. He also had to add the original Cadillac electronic dash into the passenger side dash so all of the stock diagnostic lights were available for the smog technician. And of course, he had to use an automatic transmission.

Its a lotta hoops to jump through, even after the swap. I plan on just swapping mine out when I need to smog it. Have another cradle all setup w motor/tranny, ecm and wiring stays in the engine bay, then its just a few hoses n bolts to change and the battery. Take into account Ive been thru a few installs lately and have a few more planned so its fresh in my mind lol. Might wanna try and get ahold of the ref and see what itll need to pass.

Really? You'll swap the engine out every two years to smog it? Wow, I wish that I had your time and energy!

If he has an extra cradle with the entire drivetrain, axles, struts, discs, harness and all; he just disconnects the battery, ECM harness, fuel/water lines, dogbone, hangs up the calipers, disconnects the eBrake cable then drops it all down out and the new one in. Still that's about 8 hours of work there. Better off registering the car in AZ or NV. ------------------ " THE BLACK PARALYZER" -87GT 3800SC Series III engine, custom ZZP /Frozen Boost Intercooler setup, 3.4" Pulley, Northstar TB, LS1 MAF, 3" Spintech/Hedman Exhaust, P-log Manifold, Autolite 104's, MSD wires, Custom CAI, 4T65eHD w. custom axles, Champion Radiator, S10 Brake Booster, HP Tuners VCM Suite. Thanks for all the replies. 😀 I am already aware that the smog nazis will not let me put a 5 or 6 speed behind an L67SC as they did not come from the factory that way. This is why I said 4T60.
On another note, it just so happens that I met a guy at a car show in Cameron Park and he does exactly what you guys are talking about. (swaps cradles every two years) He came to the show with a heavily modified 3800SC. I believe the guys name was Donovan. Kit

When I joined the forum I had found a thread ont his and Ive searched many times for it and still cant find it. Someone did a l67 swap as legal as can be and it wouldnt pass at the ref. Something about the fuel tank or some fitting the original car had that couldnt be put on the fiero, so the ref never passed it. I dont even wanna deal w that or making new tranny mounts n axles. Easier to just put the motor on the existing setup.
Dennis has the right idea, an "emissions legal" cradle setup, and another cradle fully set up w the motor. Then its just swapping cradles out. Have the ecm and harness to stay in the engine bay w its own fuse box, then its just power and ground, 4 cradle bolts, 2 fuel lines( 1 if returnless), 2 brake lines, cupla coolant hoses, and a partridge in a pear tree! Can do it in a day for sure

It looks like we sidestepped the question. To my knowledge West Coast Fiero in CA may still be doing CA engine swaps. There are a few other guys across the USA that still do engine swaps but it CA you must satisfy the Nazis keeping an eye on things.------------------ " THE BLACK PARALYZER" -87GT 3800SC Series III engine, custom ZZP /Frozen Boost Intercooler setup, 3.4" Pulley, Northstar TB, LS1 MAF, 3" Spintech/Hedman Exhaust, P-log Manifold, Autolite 104's, MSD wires, Custom CAI, 4T65eHD w. custom axles, Champion Radiator, S10 Brake Booster, HP Tuners VCM Suite.
