Finally found another (used) exhaust! Thanks, Joost! (Page 1/1) |

So last week on a Dutch auction site, I saw a listing from someone parting out one of his Fieros. I quickly sent him a PM and it turned out he still had the exhaust system for a V6. So we agreed on a price and I told him I needed to arrange transportation first since the exhaust obviously wouldn't fit in the Fiero. 😁
Much to my surprise, he offered me to replace the exhaust in his garage. Turned out he was a captain in the Dutch army, and the chairman of the barrack's auto club. Of course I gratefully took this offer and drove the car to where he was stationed. It turned out the garage was huge and had everything a professional garage would have.
When we raised the car on the car lift, and tried to remove my old exhaust, we quickly found out there were a few unforeseen problems. First of all, I had the car brought to a garage a few years back to have the rear brake calipers replaced and apparently they had welded the left and right hand-brake cables together! I ended up cutting the cable and used a grinder to shape the welds in such a way they could be used in the original clip that holds the two cables together. So that was problem #1.
Problem #2 was that the connecting plate of the crossover pipe to the muffler pipe was broken, so the two pipes were only held together by one bolt. But fortunately he still had that too so we replaced the crossover pipe too.
Long story short: we expected to be finished in an hour or so but it ended up being a 6 hour job. I'm so grateful he offered to do this at his garage. There would be no way I could have done this on the side of the road.
One thing though, my car sounds a lot different now. It in fact sounds like all other Fieros sound but I'm not sure I like that. It's a much darker, growlier sound now. And it's probably because of the many leaks my old exhaust had, but I really liked the sound that it had.
Anyway, I would like to thank Joost again for all his help! I know he reads the forum (not sure he is actually a member here)!

I must admit that once you move the passenger's seat all the way back, you have more room than most (European) cars have in their trunk. I've transported huge things in my Fiero but the only way to fit the exhaust system is to cut it up. 😁

Removing the passenger seat (hey, it's only four nuts) opens up a whole new world of transporting possibilities. (In the photo above of the exhaust system, I had also removed the seat.)

Is this now a 'how much stuff did you fit in a Fiero' post? with the passenger seat out, I got an entire iron duke engine in. Also a set of 4 wheels and tires, with one in the trunk.
