Drove my Fiero today and made a couple observations (Page 1/1) |

In preparing my Fiero to sell it, one thing I need to do is drive the gas out of it and fill it up with a fresh tank of fuel. So today the weather here is very nice so I took the car out and drove it ~50 miles and I noticed a couple things: 1) Original V6 and three speed auto trans, and driving roughly fifty miles at highway speeds at relatively high engine RPM the fuel gauge barely moved. It did go down, but I was hoping that this drive would have consumed more gas. 2) I also noticed that when driving at 50-60 MPH; the exhaust was actually quiet, compared to the rest of the RPM band. My car has the factory muffler and does have a catalytic converter (a Magnaflow unit that I installed several years ago). So my car has the rough equivalent of a stock exhaust system. When driving at 70+ MPH, the exhaust was considerably louder.

Might be the first time in automotive history that this has ever been stated.

Driving on highway will have TC locking On most of time to save you gas. ------------------ Dr. Ian Malcolm: Yeah, but your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn't stop to think if they should. (Jurassic Park)

things i noticed about my new to me 87 fiero.the gas guage doesn't work.the temp guage doesn't work.the tach and oil guage was 'working' until i removed and reinstalled them.the tach read 4000 at idle so not working correctly.now neither work.i bought a tach repair board off ebay.not installed yet. as bought mileage was 126000 miles but i noticed yesturday the odometer has stopped at 126000 so it could be double.also the wipers only work on high..

Fiero gas gauges are kind of more like "suggestions" rather than accurate measurements. All the Fiero gauges, actually. I can fill my car with gas and it'll read above "F" but barely move for many miles, but once it starts to move it goes quickly and the car will run out of gas a little below the 1/2 mark, a lesson I learned the hard way more than once.

My 84s Fiero gauge goes to F and then quickly drops to half tank after 25 miles, it will then sit there for the next 150 miles, then will start plummeting again. Once she starts moving again I know I have 25 ish miles to go. However that still leaves me with 3 gallong in the tank when it hits E.
My 86GT works pretty consistently across the entire band but when that sucker hits E it means E and the engine dies.

We also noticed the gas gauge is not that accurate. You definitely need to watch it as the needle is below the 1/2 mark.[This message has been edited by kendell (edited 10-04-2023).]

Any old fuel gauge not accurate can be many problems to the gauge, sender &or wiring. Few Examples for Fiero & many GM cars see https://www.fiero.nl/forum/Forum2/HTML/146784.html------------------ Dr. Ian Malcolm: Yeah, but your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn't stop to think if they should.
