Online "help" (Page 1/1)

Not so much here, but on Facebook Fiero groups the "help" is terrible.
Very few seem to have any idea of "diagnostic procedure".

Someone will post "My car won't start. What could be the problem?"

Immediate answers on just that statement:
The distributor ICM has died.
The starter has fried.
The battery is dead.
Check your alternator.
And on it goes...

Finally, somebody (usually me) will ask "what exactly is it doing?"
"It cranks fine, but won't fire."

More quick answers:
The fuel pump is dead.
The distributor ICM has died.
The timing is messed up.
The timing chain has jumped a tooth.
The valves are misadjusted. Do a compression test.
And on it goes...

He FINALLY says "I don't understand it. It was running completely fine before.
All I did was install new spark plugs and new spark plug wires. Now it won't start."

AHA! He should have started with that information. He fukked up the plug wire order.

I've never bothered to get involved with any Facebook Fiero group. Any/all info posted there seems so transitory. I'm not interested in online automotive "fast food".

I am on FB in a few groups (GGF, Classic Glastron, CVX-20) and have cancelled a few....Nice to say "Hi" to friends and such- but help with car or boat, etc a forum is MUCH better.

If someone posts helpful info about some problem (Brake, Suspension, engine) in forum not only can others easily chime in, but that thread stays for a while...and can be searched for years afterwards...On FB- within 2-4 days you can't even locate the thread where you asked for help...Stu-pid-itity!!!

Sadly, the Classic Glastron (Boat) forum that I enjoy and have posted several threads on improvements/solutions in is basically dead...no-one ever posts anything there anymore...

FakeBook deleted my account 3 or 4 years ago.
They think I am a right wing extremist.
15 or so years of pictures and videos gone...

Other bad information I have found on facebook, regarding fuel pumps.

If you jump the Pins on the ALDL connector and your fuel pump does not start its a guarantee your fuel pump is dead. Watched a jabroni change his whole pump out only to discover the damn relay was dead.

I am in a few facebook Fiero groups, but it is mainly just to be on the look out for parts or to promote this site.

I live in the middle of nowhere, but I found a guy with multiple Fiero parts cars just 30 minutes away also in the middle of nowhere.

Facebook is for lazy at-your-fingertips low-effort questions, and the corresponding low-effort answers.

If people putting low effort into their discussions bothers you, you shouldn't hang around there.

Agreed. Unfortunately, too many "new" Fiero owners don't know about PFF.
I usually try to steer them here, by posting links to PFF threads that answer their question.
