Help buy Rafe a GoPro for TurboSlug! (Page 1/1)

Patrick is upset that Rafe's racing videos aren't horizontal... because he's too old to turn his phone vertically and wants to be able to see what's going on left and right, as much as what's flying in the air. I would also like to see horizontal videos.

Since Rafe is single-handedly racing his Fiero in Europe and supporting the racing hobby of this car for an entire continent... how about we pitch in and buy him a GoPro so that he can record videos and post them to YouTube so we can watch him race.

I don't really know how to set up a GoFund me, and don't really want to learn. Cliff (Pennock), is this something you would be willing to manage via your personal PayPal link? If not let me know...

I'm willing to start by putting in $50 USD. It won't take much, but then we can start watching some awesome Fiero racing videos in 4K with quality engine sounds.

If someone knows how to get this started, I'm happy to put in the first donation, I just don't like handling other people's money...

Wow! I'm taken aback.
I do this Fiero / Turbo Slug thing because I'm like the rest of you in adoring these cars.
I don't do it to make money, or to be famous.
I have a real job and my Fiero is just a hobby and a passion.
If you want to buy me a better camera, I won't say no 😉
However, I can't guarantee to post more videos, even with better filming equipment.
I only do between 1 or 2 trackdays/race events each year. Plus a few car meetings (cars-n-coffee).

But anyway, thanks for thinking about me.
Best regards,
Rafe

I want to make one thing perfectly clear... I do not watch videos on a cell phone. I view videos the way they're supposed to be viewed... on a horizontal screen of significant size, not some piddly little thing that fits in my hand.

The only reason I even have a cell phone, is that it was necessary in order to set up and maintain my wireless home security cameras via Wi-Fi. I don't use it as a phone. It doesn't even have a SIM card. I have a landline for phone calls. Yes, I'm a dinosaur and proud of it.

It doesn't make any sense whatsoever for video to go "vertical". Our eyes are not located one above the other, they are located beside each other. We naturally see more from side to side than we do up and down. Can you imagine if we went to an IMAX theater and discovered the screen had been turned on its side! There's absolutely no valid reason why cell phones can't be held in the "landscape" orientation while shooting and/or viewing a video.

Amen, Brother, Amen. We Luddites have to stick together. I'm still longing for the days of points, condensers, and carburetors. I could tune up my cars with a couple of screwdrivers, some feeler guages, and a sparkplug wrench. (I'm sure there are lots of us that have set the points on our cars with a screwdriver and a matchbook cover.)

I kmow, I know, todays engines are lighter, more reliable, more powerful, etc., etc., etc. but as I grow older, I long for the simple things again...

Full disclosure... I was an early adopter of electronic ignition. Sometime in the mid 70's, I bought a capacitive discharge ignition conversion kit from the automotive department of Simpson-Sears to use on my big block '67 Chevelle SS396. No breaker points and condenser to degrade with time. The electronic pick-up was able to read the bumps on the cam in the distributor to fire the ignition, and the high voltage kept the plugs from fouling due to the lumpy camshaft I'd installed. It worked really well.
