The OP specifically stated he wanted to check his PMs. Clicking the Inbox in the lower left corner brings up the login box... and then his PMs. Try it!

Both ways are correct.
You need to be logged in to read your PMs. How you log in, doesn't matter. You can either log in through the link in the top left of the main forum page, log in if you go directly to your PMs, or post a new/reply to an existing thread (since that wil automatically log you in).
