Alright so I want to clarify this, since information about this is scattered a bit. I just want to go over what bumpers are what.

1984:

* Bumper Pad (1984): This was the only option for regular production Fieros, bumpers from this year are visually identical to later model years but have a different mounting pattern in the wheel wells compared to later years.

* 1984 Indy 500: This bumper is visually identical to the later 86GT Aero/GT nose, with ribbed molding. Presumably uses the 1984 mounting pattern.

1985:

* Bumper Pad (1985+): Identical to 84 externally. Uses the universal mounting pattern going forward.

* Aero/GT: The first GT Nose, similar to the Indy with ribbed molding, now using the universal mounting pattern going forward Rear bumper unique to the 85gt, being intended for notchback taillights.

1986:

* Bumper Pad (1985+): Identical to 84 externally. Uses the universal mounting pattern going forward.

* Aero/GT: The first GT Nose, similar to the Indy and later GT noses but now features smooth molding. Introduces new longer back bumper specific to the GT cars redesigned tailights.

1987:

* New Coupe Nose: This nose was later used on the Formula, isn't as aggressive as the GT nose, but is more rounded and lack the pads of the bumper pad of yesteryear

* Aero/GT: Same as 1986

1988:

*Formula/Coupe Nose: Same as 1987

*Aero/GT: Same as 1986

Am I missing anything?

84 Indy's had ribbed molding which carried over to the 85 GT.

Smooth molding did not make an appearance until 1986 on the GT's and 87 on the coupes. The 87 and 88 coupes have their own unique front and rear fascia

Also introduced on the 86 GT is a different shaped and longer rear Fascia.

86 and 87 SE used the identical bodywork to the 85 GT and the Indy. Aero front and rear bumpers and side cladding, with ribbed beltline molding.

87 and 88 base coupe and 88 Formula all used smooth beltline molding. The also had a revised rear bumper cover, also with no bumperpads.
87 base rear bumper cover had one exhaust cutout - on the left side. All 88 base rear bumper covers had cutouts on both sides, although only the Formula had pipes on both sides.

As far as I know, the 84 Indy and 85 GT used identical pieces - including mounting points. (Not saying that's absolute. Just what I always believed.) They certainly look identical.

And not to complicate things , but the different bumpers also require matching plastic wheel well liners.

And to add to Patrick’s point….. the honeycomb assembly behind the bumper is different too.
