Years ago?? 82-T/A [At Work] DEC 13, 02:30 PM Best thing to do is to take the VIN (if you still have it), and then do a vehicle check on the VIN. It will show the last person / place it was registered to, and you'll know your answer. From that point, you can then do a person search to try to find the individual, and then offer to buy it back. If you don't have the VIN, you can look up the VIN if it's ever been registered to you or a family member... simply by logging into the online DMV / tax record site for your state... and it should show all the cars you've registered over the years with VINs. This is realistically so that you can "denounce" ownership. For example, if someone was to dump a car on the side of the highway that you'd previously sold... if the car was never re-registered, you could be held liable for any towing fees unless you can prove you no longer owned it.
