Insurance went way up due to info (Page 1/4)
cvxjet FEB 14, 06:29 PM
My Fiero's insurance doubled- I received a letter from State Farm stating they had received "information from Consumer Reports via LexisNexis"....

#1..Who the heck is LexusNexis?

#2 We all know that a lot of magazines back in the day bombed on the Fiero- some of it deserved but a lot of it due to "Invisible ads" by Toyo-pet and Honda, etc.

#3 We also know that the Fiero is one of the safest cars ever made- in the 80s only one Volvo was rated higher in safety.

I have been with State Farm since I started driving in 1977....I am going to have to move on- can't afford to have my insurance doubled...

Any of you been "attacked" by this kind of crap?

Read this article. It covers that company and it's mistakes.

Good stuff. Thanks for sharing that.

So they can just be incompetent idiots and screw people over and then sit back and claim to be "super-duper" executives.....

Now I don't know if the report refers to me or my car...My minivan did not go way up in cost on the last insurance premium....

We need to make the whole world a swirling bloody mess....that will be a great thing....right?

Can I ask how much they increased your insurance with?

Personally, I know it sucks... but I change insurance companies every 2-3 years. Loyalty doesn't mean anything anymore... because they will consistently raise your rates all the time. I have had zero accidents, except for two where I was stopped at a light and someone rear-ended me... (neither my fault, obviously). I've been driving for... I dunno... since 1995... and I have to pay something like $2,300 every 6 months just for the priviledge of driving my cars (full liability and coverage though). It's insane.

But I'm wondering what I'm going to have to pay for my daughter when I register her Fiero... hahah....

Deja Vu….
I even started a thread about this in OT.
I have a lot of input for you about this very thing. Can it wait till the next GGF meeting?
Until then, be advised that State Farm is definitely NOT a good neighbor and they’re certainly NOT your friend. Like most insurance companies, they care not about you but rather your money.

#1 Consumer Reports has nothing to do with this. They hold no influence on insurance.

#2 get over the old magazine stories. Yes the car did well in crash test of that era but could not pass todays. None of the cars from then can. It has nothing to do with this.

Odds are tge rates have more to do with the fact where you live and to do with a car that is do old that they likely don’t want to cover it. This is why most of us are with collector car companies.

If you do not have specified amount you are going to lose anyways and with State Farm you are likely over paying.

If I recall you are in the SF California area. This is one of the most expensive areas for car insurance in the country.

You just need to shop around and I am sure you will find better coverage and a better price. You should shop all insurance ftom time to time to protect from being over charged or under covered.

I keep cutting my coverage to keep my rate down. No idea why they keep jacking it up so much, nothing has happened. The prevalence of injury lawsuit ads I see here in FL is disturbing though, so maybe it's the jackpot justice culture causing it. But I also think they just want to see how much they can squeeze you before you'll cancel.

The Fiero did well in crash tests, but the other side of it is how likely is it to be in a crash at all.
I don't know those stats, but I can imagine that back in the day, the Fiero probably had a higher rate of accidents due to the physics of the car and who it attracted as drivers.
I think a driver's experience driving their own car, or similar types of cars, is a far more important indicator than the generic global statistics.

I imagine you've had a Fiero a long time. Myself, I've driven my current Fiero for 13 years, and Fieros in general for a total of about 21 I think.
I think that should count for something. I'm not nearly as likely to mishandle the car and crash it as I was in the late 90s. I'm also more mature than I was back then.
There's no official record (because I got lucky) but I had a few dangerous slides, spins, and other close calls in my first Fiero. Combination of less skill in the car and poor judgment.
My current Fiero's "incidents" have been tame, a minor slide or two on rural roads with no traffic around, and it's never been spun.
Insurance companies do give credit for age, but it seems not for experience with a particular car.

Nowadays I worry about a growing disconnect between people who are used to having driving aids, and people who are used to driving their own car. There are people who have no idea how to properly handle a car because they've always had a computer doing it for them. Insurance companies ought to be interested in identifying who those people are.
In that respect, a young driver could sometimes be safer just because they haven't learned bad habits yet.

One example: I watched a middle aged adult play a computer driving game, driving a car from the 70s, and he kept complaining about the simulation when he'd slam the brakes and then couldn't steer. He's obviously always had ABS cars in real life.

I've only rarely driven cars with ABS. My accident avoidance would be sub-standard in those cars because I don't have a "stomp and steer" reflex.

Insurance companies aren't able to sort that out, and they don't appear to try.

Yup, auto insurance is a business selling 'products' for profit that you're require.

Insurance agents/brokers are wholly dependent on their customers’ premium payments.

The ultimate commission gig which offers big potential financial wealth...........

Last time I paid $275....this time they want $576.....

I did get a ticket back a year ago; A road had been closed due to rain/flood damage (Closed to all but local traffic) I had driven to a dog day-care after they had stated I could....then drove out to San Ramon.....saw a couple of mud-puddles and the road was slightly undercut in one area.

A friend called telling me he was stuck in Dublin and needed a ride to a DR.s appointment- tried driving I-580 but traffic was at stand-still, so I decided to try driving Crow Canyon road (Knew it was "safe" due to previous drive)- came around a turn and at a wide spot 10-12 police pulling everyone over and writing tickets.

One >WEEK< later the road was opened- drove it and there was not one change to the road- basically, they had kept it closed to allow a "Income surge"...

I support the police 100%, and follow laws very strictly....I had figured that with all the roads that had serious damage they just hadn't got around to opening CC...

I have a had a couple of tickets before over my 46 years of driving....but my insurance never really went up
