I've now ordered 3 separate sets of valve seals... EVERY SINGLE SET has been absurdly tiny and does not fit my daughter's 1985 Fiero 2.5 cyl head.
Were the valve seals in 1987+ totally different? Rock Auto lists dozens of valve seals for sale, and I've bought now three sets of them... and they all are the smaller ones. What on Earth am I doing wrong? It's crazy to me that Rock Auto would list these smaller valve seals for the 1985 model year when I know in fact they don't actually belong to that model year?

Sigh... I just measured the OD for the valve stem seals (well, for what they go on). They list both, for some reason... which I'm not sure why. Most of the ones they list are for the smaller valves... no idea why, but I just ordered another set and made sure they were the larger ones. Ugh...

Ok, I ordered that set as well.
Can you explain to me where those little O-rings go on the valves? The big fat ones are obvious... they sit on the (intake I think?) valve stem... but the little O-rings, where do they go. I'm having a hard time understanding where those go. Do I fit them around the valve stem, and they simply sit below the valve retainer and keepers? What holds them in place?

Todd the orings fit on the lower groove of the valve stem and the locks go on the upper groove. your overhaul gasket set should have valve stem seals for the intakes. generally the smaller od seals are for replacement guides. the id should match the diameter of the valve stem with some compression to create the seal.

Thanks Sleek. To be honest, my daughter was able to get one of the very last "Fel-Pro" head gasket sets for the Iron Duke on Rock Auto. But I am reluctant to use the seals that came with the kit because at this point, they're so old and probably rotted out. I was comparing the various materials that were used, and it seems Vitton is the one that's most appropriate (beneficial) for high heat... and even comes with a little metal shield that goes over the valve stem, instead of the normal rubber boot.
For the O-Rings... thank you. I couldn't find that anywhere in the service manual, which is weird. Engine rebuilding seems to be generic in there, other than the torque specifications. But I went ahead and ordered new O-rings from Clevite/Mahle... seems both the intake AND exhaust get those on the second groove?
Thanks!

Yes most GM engines from the era just used the O rings to seal the retainer cap and keep most oil off the valve stems and it worked well allowing some oil to lube the stems and guides. sleek
