Not talkin bout hoss n lil joe, scored some schweet goodies. Left for santa rosa at 6am, picked up 2 f40 transmissions(1 new/1 used), the axles, a shifter, cables, and all the bolts from the removal of the used one, and a custom fabbed 88 cradle set up for a northstar swap.

axles

Transmissions

Stuffs

Cradle

In the second cradle pic theres some logo on the control arm mounts. Says MTD? Thought they make lawn equipment, maybe they were branching out? Now I can put an f40 in my f40!

Happy happy dawg dawg

You better hope that the MTD logo on the cradle has nothing to do with the garden equipment company... as their stuff was (is?) crap.

Congrats on the score!

MTD started producing automotive stampings in 1936,

FWIW, the keys to your Fiero were probably manufactured by Briggs and Stratton(now under the name Strattec), who still makes replacement parts for the lock cylinders, and key blanks

looks like a nice haul.

I invited Lou Dias to trash me in my own thread, he refused. sorry. if he trashes your thread going after me. I tried.

It is the same MTD that made all the lawn equipment. One of my FB friends (who recently completed a ground-up resto on his 87 coupe) is retired from them, and speaks rather glowingly about their stuff. But they also made a lot of different things.

But yeah... hell of a score. I never run across stuff like that, here.

Uh oh so MTD made this cradle?! Its probably a POS then lol. Yeah it was a nice haul, and this stuff never shows up round hyah. Paid a pretty penny for it all, I got him to knock down the price a wee bit by not getting the northstar stuff in the bundle. Some x braces to drill the heads n block, other random northstar stuffs, the manuals that showed all the fiero frame dimensions (klm books- something like that?), and some other books. Forget what he was planning to make but now he wants a cobra kit car so the fiero stuffs no bueno. Yeah im stoked but just got the wind knocked outta me no joke.

Dont get to hound craigslist like I used to, but a few months ago I searched and found an 88 blue 3800sc fiero. I was brought in from another state and had the CA bar smog nonsense done already, big brakes, all for $3k! Problem was the ad was 21 days old already, sent a few messages and got a whole lotta nothing. Maybe a week and a half passes and the guy texts me the car is sold. He sold it to his friend. Im super bummed out. Then today( I was halfway through typing this out when I took a break for a cl search lol) lookie what pops up in the same town for $5k more posted today.

My first job out of high school back in '73 was as an air-cooled engine mechanic. A lot of lawn equipment came through that shop. The MTD gas-powered (horizontal shaft B&S engine) reel mowers were notorious for quickly chewing up their reel bearings. There was basically nothing to keep grit out of the ball bearing races at each end of the reel, so you can imagine how durable that design was. An old mechanic who worked on these mowers at this shop had devised a way to incorporate and install seals to protect the bearings. His modification worked very well. It was something MTD should've been doing at the factory.
