Just a stupid Question about iron duke Fieros . I am in the process of building a 2.5 ID for a boat. While I was working on it I started thinking why don't Fiero owners consider the 3.0 Iron Duke from a marine application for their ride. They are the same basic engine only they are 170 hp right from the get go. Am I missing something? I think I will pick up a 2m4 and give it a go. Its just a stroker version of the 2.5. Has anyone here tried this?

clever thought cant help but wonder if it has to do with a bellhousing incompatibility. Alot of the marine dukes used the SBC bellhousing. I might be remembering wrong but worth checking into.

Yes you are right. I was looking through other forums for trucks and boats and it looks like maybe the internals can be used to build a stroker with the Fiero /citation/gm fwd blocks. Just a thought sleek

Marine engines often have "reveres" crank rotation to Vehicle versions.
Often need to change the cam & more to use them in cars.------------------ Dr. Ian Malcolm: Yeah, but your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn't stop to think if they should. (Jurassic Park)

thanks but I checked and according to Mercruiser all 2.5 and 3.0 sterndrives they build are ccw rotation same as a car. the particular one I am rebuilding is ccw rotation and flat tappet cammed. well built with metal timing gears and electronic distributor. Just an option for someone who wants to gain a little performance and keep the original look of the engine compartment.

If you find a reverse rotation 3.0 merc\omc\volvo in the wild I will eat my hat. 99 percent of the ones you are going to find are going to be standard automotive blocks that have been beefed up a little (if at all).

I didn't realize this topic had been so well covered. I just brought it up for discussion as I have reconditioned several 153/151/ 181 marine engines and knew they were related . The forged crank in this 3.0 liter Mercruiser looks like it could be a good option to build a strong duke powered car. sleek

This is something Id really like to see someone do. Even if the value proposition is poor. It be interesting to see a Fiero with a beefed up Iron Duke, the engine that brought the car infamy

I believe that the longer stroke crank flange of the 3.0 L Mercruiser engine is not compatible with GM automobile transmissions. The Duke has been modified for a bit more power but is limited by light duty rods and a 4500 RPM redline. Some info here: Upping Duke Power 2.5 engine resource pages
Just a guess but the later S-10 Duke engines may be a stronger platform to work with. ------------------ " THE BLACK PARALYZER" -87GT 3800SC Series III engine, custom ZZP /Frozen Boost Intercooler setup, 3.4" Pulley, Northstar TB, LS1 MAF, 3" Spintech/Hedman Exhaust, P-log Manifold, Autolite 104's, MSD wires, Custom CAI, 4T65eHD w. custom axles, Champion Radiator, S10 Brake Booster, HP Tuners VCM Suite.
