Upgrading sound system in 85 2M6 (Page 1/1)

Hey all, I will soon be in possession of a beautiful white 85 2M6, completely stock with one original owner. Currently right now the car has the stock stereo system which is very inconsistent and I would like to change that out immediately after I get the car.

My first question is what are compatible head units that have Apple CarPlay or some sort of screen I can fit in an 85 fiero?

If there is no possible compatible screen head units, what is a good cheap single din you know I could use?

Lastly, what are compatible speakers that will drastically improve the overall sound system. I know there are speakers on the dash and in the headrest on the 85, which speakers have been best for you?

Thanks guys, and I’m looking forward to begin this journey with a Fiero!

Howdy.

My flavor of choice for head units is those fold-out screen types. Boss makes a few decent ones otherwise a Chinese unit seems to work well for me.

The biggest thing about the Fiero is the quality of the dash speakers. That's going to be the biggest deciding factor in your sound system. Of course, a round speaker is possible and would give the best sound. Kenwood also makes some very nice sounding direct fit replacements. (My choice). As far as seat speakers options are limited these days. You need to use 5 OHM speakers which are hard to comeby. I prefer to leave a good set of stock speakers in there, since they are so close to your ear they don't need a ton of oomph to sound ok.

Stock subwoofer setups work well for the car.

If you have the ability to pull your seats console and interior to line the floor and wall with Dynamat you will get a HUGE difference in sound aswell!

I have a pretty good system, much much better than factory, and everyone who hears it loves it, I have Rodney dash speakers, pioneer 4" 2 way speakers in the headrests (wired in series instead of factory parallel to account for ohms difference), I built an enclosure for a cheap 10"sub under the dash (no AC, with AC max is 8"), and I run a 90s Pontiac cassette radio, with a hardwired aux port (with microphone in cluster and cruise control button controlling play/pause like a headset), sound is great, can get plenty loud, but I have it tuned nice and flat, like it's intended, sounds great!

If you're into 3D printing, you can print out an adapter plate for the dash to accept 5.25" speakers. For the deck, be sure to get a wiring harness adapter and use that instead of cutting wires. Also be aware that if you hook up the stereo and you keep blowing the fuse for your exterior lights, disconnect the dimmer wire from the stereo and don't use it.
