Pretty interesting article... but I picked up on this one sentence...
"This engine received internal balancing in 1988, along with hydraulic engine mounts to quell vibration."
Can anyone explain exactly what this means? I know the 88 engine was internally balanced... but what exactly is a "hydraulic engine mount?"
I'm aware that 1985+ Fiero V6s received a shock absorber for the V6 engine that mounts right near where the catalytic converter passes... but in what way are the motor mounts hydraulic? I've never owned an 88, but this seems like an upgrade for other years, unless this was just incorrect information being passed? I just looked on Rock-Auto, and the front motor mount looks identical to the one on my 87. The top engine strut is also identical... so what am I missing?

I think the engine mount (under the crank) was "fluid filled". Replacements are/were absurdly expensive. I was under the impression that the mounts were physically different (i.e., won't fit) from the earlier years. Could be wrong on that, however. 88s never got the little shock absorber. I believe the tranny mounts were the same.

Man... I just learned a ton from this... thank you!
This is a good article to describe the differences: https://www.gmtrubber.com/a...pes-of-motor-mounts/
This is a solid motor mount from a Fiero V6 and L4 (seems all years):
And this is a "Hydraulic" motor mount from a Fiero V6 (88) and L4 (87-88):
From what I can tell, they appear to be totally identical in the way they mount to the frame and the engine bracket. I just ordered one on Amazon for $28 bucks.
Best I can figure, the biggest difference is the ability to dampen vibrations better than rubber, and reduction of harmonics across other components.

There is a solid rubber motor mount for the '88 V6 (engine bracket is different from previous years). in April I installed this:
It's listed for 86-88 Fiero and others on RockAuto; Amazon says it does not fit. But it is a perfect direct fit. I have it with rubber tranny mounts and a poly dogbone, and it works just fine.[This message has been edited by OldGuyinaGT (edited 08-17-2024).]
