Anyone seen this Iron Duke shorty header before? (Page 1/1)

I saw it on eBay and bought it ($100 shipped). It looked reasonably better than a stock exhaust manifold, though I'd say the factory manifold is not really that bad. My thought would be to have it blasted and then ceramic coated and give it to my daughter to install. Any thoughts? The eBay auction said it was originally purchased from the Fiero Store almost 20 years ago. I still have the 1997/1998 Fiero Store catalog, but I don't recall seeing it in there.

Do you see any potential performance improvement from this?

Let me know if 1000 more horsepower seems reasonable to get from this? (that is a joke)

I really dont see alot of meaningful improvement for a header that's going to be significantly more fragile than the stock manifold

Doesn't the stock manifold combine the 2 and 3 cylinder to one big exhaust port? If so, this new one with separate ports may aid in the exhaust flow and pressure. Just a guess.

Yeah, it does. I was thinking that too... though to be honest... looking at the exhaust ports, it doesn't seem like there's going to be much benefit at all since the design of the cyl head automatically combines them. I'm guessing this was for emissions purposes.

And then you look at the 87-88 design, and it's clearly a better design (at least from my opinion)...

Yeah I almost wonder if running the split style header would be a reduction in flow on the combined port since you would now have a small portion of the exhaust hitting the split.

Not to mention all of those weld on a header that gets hot and wet frequently is gonna be a failure point

That manifold on a slightly reworked Duke engine should work out fine. I know of a few Fiero owners that built their Duke engines for more power but I doubt if they hit over 120 HP. Still not a bad result for an economy engine, IIRC one builder used LS1 pistons (I believe certain SBC pistons fit as well), a mild cam and a larger intake system. He was running a stick and 10:1 compression. Years back Neal Klein did a Duke performance build and he took it to Carlisle. He said it performed well but health issues forced him out of the hobby.

It should arrive today. I'm not going to have my daughter put it on yet as I want to have it reconditioned, but she basically has a stock engine block. Best I can assume to pretend is that it's "blueprinted" because it has all new parts and a few upgrades to improve the efficiency of the engine. But other than a better catalytic converter and an 88 exhaust manifold... and a .040 overbore (it had 200k miles on the block, had to)... there's no real improvement.

I do also have a Holley TBI unit that I plan to have her rebuild and eventually install it with a ported intake manifold. I think the two will work well together. I'm guessing, if I'm not being too crazy... that I should expect ~8hp from the header and Holley TBI (with port-matched intake manifold). Goal is 100 horsepower, hahaha...

Sounds like a good plan. Some good info here.
