I recently purchased an 85/86GT 4spd fully loaded with T-Tops. Got it for cheap (no keys no title) just for the T-Tops so I could cut the roof off and transplant it onto my Formula. But I feel bad about sacrificing the GT just for the roof. The 85/86 (unsure of year book says 85, bought as 86 ) but don't really care. It's got 40k original miles and in decent shape except for ex wife tune up. Story I got was the car belonged to the husband and he just drove it on the weekends in good weather= the low milage. Then they got divorced and the wife insisted she got the car out of spite. I picked it up in CT but it's got FL tags, what appears to be a bullet hole in the windshield bat strikes on the tail lights, windshield and a missing headlight cover. All easy fixes but again feels wrong to chop it up. Also has grey on grey Mr. Mikes speaker seats. Thoughts? No keys no title leans me to parting it out but title is easy to get as well as the keys. ????

The 85 GT was a notchie, the 86 GT was a fastback. Early production 86 GTs had 4 speeds. If it's an 85 or 86, the T tops were installed aftermarket.

olejoedad, is correct. Its just a pure aftermarket install nothing more. I would not feel bad cutting it up if the car it was going into was in better shape. Now, I would make sure that all the bits and pieces are there for the ttop's exterior and interior. 88's were the only special year for "factory" option ttops with associated vin numbers.

Was this it? I saw that on marketplace, tried to get the roof and plastic rockers, but the seller sold it before I could, preferring not to part it out, but sell it whole. Missing headlight cover, broken windshield, no keys, notch back GT that's listed as 86, very very very coincidental, was listed at 26k miles though I think, so might not be the same one, but seems too coincidental if not. Hey if you don't want those t tops, I do hahahaha, I'd still be interested in the lower rocker panels, as I had asked the seller, and now that I know, the Mr Mike's seats if those were in good shape.[This message has been edited by 1985 Fiero GT (edited 02-26-2025).]

Had a garage fire and sold the house soon after so haven't had any time to mess with it. Seats seem fine other than dirty and smelly. Rain got in through the windshield I'd say and the inside wreaks. Where are you located?

Umm, ya think!? 😀 Probably going to ship it to our new "home" in SC with the other 2 88's. Start/finish restoring them when the garage is built.

I would not "sacrifice" it. You would deprive the world of a Fiero, a nice one. What would happen to it after you removed the roof. Would you put the Formula roof on it ?
Your new GT has ... an interesting history. The wife hated her husband and took it out of hate. You should give it back to her ex husband, .
Imagine, he driving up to her home with his Fiero back .

Let’s get the TTop thing in perspective.
There were near 8,000 kits made. Many installed a number of them were used for warranty and parts replacement.
The First TTop was done in June iff1983 on a pilot car. The first few had larger glass and no trim bar on the halo. The rest were all the same less the merged gasket in the 88 models.
The 88 cars were not installed by GM. They were installed by Cars and Concepts. Many if the pre 88 cars were also installed at the same plant by Cars and Concepts. If not they were installed by one of their trained distributors.
The early tops were considered a dealer installed option. They could be modified and sold by Pontiac dealers and not void the warranty.
So the 88 cars really are no better or valuable than any other TTop. The true value is in the condition Today. Bad glass or gaskets the tops are useless. In many cases the early models were done better as there was less rush.
As for this GT. Unless you can fix it and sell it for a profit then do it but I see more cost here than profit.
It is cars like this that will fix snd repair better Fiero’s and keep them alive. No parts cars no repairs for better cars.
We can’t save them all. This one car could help restore 10 other cars.
Right now any prime condition TTop is of the same value. Time has taken a toll on these and there are no more new parts outside dome od us who stashed some away in case of a dropped top etc.
What was interesting was Pontiac said it could not be converted and Cars and Concrpts showed it could be. The tops were considered to be made a factory option every year till 1988.
I would say the cost of crash testing may have delayed them as the Fiero budget was not great. Tops conversion like this would need new test. As a dealer option they could get around it.
Mine was done by an installer and through a dealer. They used a second window sticker similar to the 88 models.
