Interesting bit of Fiero Trivia... (Page 1/1)

I don't know if I'd really call it trivia, but curious what you guys think.

I bought a spare set of decklid vents a while back, and discovered that they are noticeably lighter than the engine vents that were already on my 85 Fiero. Maybe this is obvious to everyone... they have the same underside grill that's on my 87 SE (though I don't have them with me to compare).


Either way, I noticed the PAIR of vents... old ones from my 85, weigh a combined total of 7 pounds. The new set, weighs a combined weight of 4 pounds. So, 3.5 lbs compared to 2 lbs for the new one.







You'd have to be really hard up for 3 pounds to make a difference back there, but I suppose if you were building a race car and counting calories so to speak... it's a little interesting.

The "foil / tin" underneath weighs 1/2 a pound each side. So you could remove them from either, and gain a full 4 pounds of weight savings! Haha...

Hi Todd . mine are definitely original 1985 GT vents and yes they are 2 lbs within an ounce. maybe your grates are made of lead. LOL anyway mine are the light ones and original. sleek

Thanks Sleek... I'm curious... does yours have the "louver" style grate underneath, or does it have the honeycomb style grate?

My 85gt had the honeycomb style, and is noticeable heavier than my dad's 86 SE vents, stronger to, the outer louvers that make up the vent can be flexed by hand on the later style, mine on the other hand, I would be comfortable walking on them (probably have to, what can I say, sometimes my work space gets crowded and I have to do some gymnastics haha, and they aren't in good enough shape to care about the paint or anything haha)

Yeah, I noticed that too... a significant difference in strength. The lighter one can be flexed somewhat easily, while the heavier ones are solid.
