Ill never buy any asian cars. JMO. Theyre good like the Oklahoma indians used to do when buying a car...when it breaks, leave it where it lies. Used to even be a joke that they got rid of it when it ran out of gas....

I have a 2004 Mitsubishi gallant with 146k on it. 3.8 sohc auto. I have gotten 60k miles with 0 repairs. I meticulously maintain my cars and run full synth. I paid 5500 for it a few years back and have not looked back since. Its a fully loaded LS model with plenty of options and room. The body style was offered from 04-08, and while not a lot of aftermarket (performance), it is easy to get parts for and easy to work on.

Roger --- Why won't you buy "Asian cars"? Would you buy a German car? I'm all for keeping my money in America if I can but the Dodge/Ford/Chevy you're driving now could easily have been built in Canada or Mexico. I have an truck AND a bike both made in the good old US of A but I've had plenty of cars/trucks/bikes that were built in some other country that were just as reliable as what I currently have. Or do you just have a problem with Asians?
Shill --- Nothing wrong with an ex-fleet vehicle. My '04 Blazer was a fleet vehicle and has been a great truck (so far). Other than the typical Chevy/Blazer issues (4wd front wheel bearings), I haven't had a problem with it. I currently have a check engine light on (and have for the past year or so) but I'm pretty sure that's just the charcoal canister. I'm not spending money to fix something that doesn't affect anything. Fleet vehicles (other than taxis) probably had better maintenance than most privately owned vehicles. Companies don't want to spend money they don't have to so it's better for them to fix little issues before they become big ones. It would also really suck if their saleman got stranded on the road on his way to that "big sale".

I would say to look for a honda, if you want something that will run a long time and doesn't need a lot of repairs. If you are looking at cars out of warranty, then read up on owner opinions and forums. For example, my Aztek has known issues with head gaskets and intake gaskets and trannies. These same items are found in other GM cars like the Impala. If work hasn't been done on the car, I would be prepared to shell out the money in the future. I am talking about the 3.4L, early 2000s.

I truly think it is ugly. I am really trying hard to get past all those luxuries that I "WANT" thought it does have manual which will keep my somewhat in my comfort zone. Doesn't have any other options. Something tells me it is the car for me right now, other parts say I should keep looking.

my brother had one of those same year too. He said it was the BIGGEST pos he had ever driven. he only had it for 3 months before he went out and traded it for a brand new ford festia. the engine never ran right, tranny was messed up. electrical system broke 3 times.

I bought a 2006 VW Cabrio convertable with 50K on it for my daughter for 5500 out the door. That's a far better car and a convert to boot. I would not give more than 4K for that car if it has ZERO known problems.

I'll have to tell you something up front having owned a variety of Mitsubishi vehicles, including a good handful of DSMs. Their reliability is rather poor. Seriously. Literally you ABSOLUTELY CANNOT exceed ANY of the recommended service points on anything that is to be serviced on the car. And near anything Mitsubishi is going to nickle-n-dime you to death - even more than Fieros shall I dare say.
I had a 2G Spyder. Timing belt is supposed to be serviced at 80K miles. At 80,200 miles - near literally - it threw a timing belt (somehow didn't bend the valves, despite it being an interference engine). At 30,000 miles, I lost a tie rod. At 65,000, I lost a motor mount (the front mount literally fell apart). I also within 60,000 miles, went through a power steering pump and other front suspension pieces including A arm replacements. At 102,000 miles I blew the entire exhaust out in front of the cat back up to the flex pipe - literally, it just fell off the car.
Keep in mind this all was on a southern car - no rust.
My 1G DSM was a bit more reliable, but I still had crazy stuff happen to it. I somehow broke the front cross member. Yes, the entire front cross member that holds the engine and front suspension to it. I was driving one day and it split completely down the middle where the front motor mount was. Never seen anything like that. It was however probably the most reliable Mitsubishi car I owned and indeed lasted the longest (over 200,000 miles), but it was a serious POS. The rear hatch had serious leak issues, frequently had strange issues with it's power steering too like on my 2G, and eventually just modded the hell out of it and drove it 'till it died.
There are exceptions, like posted above, and I think MadCurl's daily driver is a 2G Spyder with well around a third of a million miles on it. I'd personally stay away from ANYTHING that says Mitsubishi on it - even an Evo since so many have been ragged out. Theres reasons Mitsubishi is thinking of pulling out of the North American market.........[This message has been edited by Fiero84Freak (edited 11-16-2012).]
