The Cruze (I hate seeing the name because the spelling irks me) will likely pull down mid 30s if you're not terribly kind on the go pedal. I've heard reports of people rolling over 50 mpg on the highway at fairly normal running speeds. But, if you're really looking for a new vehicle solely because of fuel economy, you may as well check out the Prius family. They're consistent and fairly cheap new or used, however, I'd downshift to pass you just to offset any possible environmental saving you could ever do.... Ya know, because I'm a dick like that

LOL, I cant get a Prius. I think they are some of the ugliest cars out there. And I don't want the tree hugger image I have a reputation to keep up

I own a cruze, mileage is pretty accurate, in city my wife averages around 29, and on the highway I have been able to get 50 mpg at 65 mph. The only complaints I have is the auto shifting sucks, I constantly put it in the "fake" manual mode, as I don't like the 1-2 second delay in shifts, and after a couple of hours the seat becomes very uncomfortable in my lower back. As for the diesel engine, it is due to hit the market in the 2014 model, mileage estimate is (going from memory, as we have only sold one through the dealership so far) 3-4 mpg better then the eco, cost 3-4 grand more than the eco.

The Echo is already expensive, the Diesel adds even more

I don't have a Cruze but would like to mention they have had several recalls lately. I heard this on the news.
By the way, just curious. What did you ever do with your Shortstar? Did it live on in another car?

I put it into my 2002 Intrigue. The Short Star in it got up to 250,000 miles before the trans cooler broke inside the radiator. That filled the trans with coolant and filled the engine coolant with trans fluid. HUGE UGLY MESS I just took out the drive train and replaced it with the Short Star drive train that I took out of the Fiero.

Look into the Hyundai Veloster there around the same price, I think they look better, more space depending on how you look at it, Way more standard features, and when I say they get 50MPG.... they really do

We test drove a Cruze, Focus, and Civic last week-end for my son to buy a car. I was surprised to hear him say the Cruze is at the top of the list, the Focus second, and the Civic third. Personally, I thought they were all pretty similar, except the Civic had the "kit car" looking dash.

Honda dropped the ball.... that's the only way to describe their quality right now.
