Looks like it had a violent death.

I'll bet that made a hell of a noise.

Edit - I just reread your original post. Apparently not. I'm very surprised.

Yeah, it didn't really make much of a noise at all when it failed. I knew it would fail... eventually. I had one of the ignition coils go out and I found that cylinder 4 had an oil sheen on top of the piston. I was hoping it was just a leaking valve seal but knew the rings was another possibility. I was hoping the valve seal because it gave a little puff of smoke when started but then went away like our Saturn used to and leaking valve seals was common on those. I planned to tear into it this winter and would have probably ended up honing and re-ringing the cylinders and pistons once I actually got into it and saw it was the rings on number 4. Our daughter just turned 16 a couple of months ago and is taking Drivers Ed in High School right now, so we planned to pass the car down to her until she saved up and bought her own after I tore into it and fixed it. Sadly, it just didn't make it that long. Now she will get a car with a much lower mileage engine in it to commute to school and back. My wife and I will pick up something hopefully more sporty for us to enjoy together. I was thinking 1st or 2nd gen Eclipse/Laser/Talon but... My parents called the other day and my Mom mentioned having me bring the Camaro back with us when we go out for vacation in February. They left the car tome in their will however they no longer ever drive it because it's just to painful to get in and out of for them with how low the seats are. They've been talking and rather than let it set and rot away in the garage, they think it might be better for me to take it home now. It's not a 69 or anything that classic but it is a 89 which is my graduation year. It's not a Z28 though. It's a metallic blue RS with a convertible top, 305 TBI V8 and chrome 5 star Cragar rims. I still remember the first time my Dad let me take it for a drive. He told me "If you bend it, don't come home".

The third gens are just starting to pick up in popularity, as collectors. My first (and only) F-body was an 88 Firebird Formula with T-tops and... a 305 TBI V8. I still have a weak spot for them.
I think the RS of that vintage was just as nice as the Z28. Just different. I'm sure there will be a sentimental value to you, but if you don't mind changing stuff, everything "Z28" can be bolted in to your RS.
I wouldn't mind seeing pics of it, if you bring it home.

I've also always liked the Protege5. My wife was half-azzed looking for something to drive, around town, to keep the miles off her Odyssey van (aka The Dogmobile. - She's a dog trainer.)
The Protege5 looks like a lot of fun to drive. That's actually more important to her than she lets on. We've got a Miata, that she likes to take out, and get hole shots on BMWs at red lights. It just doesn't have room for a dog crate, or much of anything else, for that matter.

I actually really like the Protege5. It might not be the fastest car we've ever owned, but yeah it is fun to drive. If my future son in-law hadn't come over and picked up a bunch of scrap metal we had (busted Kubota rear drive case, broken air compressor, old water heater and such) I'd take pics of the intake torn down. Since I doubted I'd need it in the future and I'm really trying to cut back on things I save that never end up being needed or getting used, I had him take pretty much all but the head from the old engine so I can't take pics of it now. However, it's similar to the Yamaha intake on the V6 from the old Taurus. It has flaps in it that are actuated to change the length of the runners. It really was neat to look at and see. Wait, I found some pics of it online.

As to the Camaro, I have some pics from our last visit a few years back. My Dad says the top has worn a bit since then and will probably need a new one in the next year or 2 and that my sister put a little bumper rash on the bottom of the front nose when she drove it. Other than that it looks the same. He's going to get the paint code from the guy who did the repainting on it so I have it to get touch up paint. Anywho, this is it .

Nice Camaro!
I had a g/f who had an 86 IROC. The front bumper stayed scratched up at the bottom.

The heck with the Camaro... I want to hear a little about the Chevelle (I'll guess '71-'72) that's lurking in the garage.

[EDIT] Oh, I found a picture of it. Not an SS.

Older people comming through the car show will appreciate the raked profile and I wouldn't be suprised to find they compliment the owner on it. My Dads 70 something Chevelle has a raked stance to it also. Although he has meatier tires in the back to sorta fill it in.

It's a 72 if I remember correctly. And yes, sadly not a SS. I don't know why he chose a 4 door but he did. I "like" it but there are a few things I dislike about it. The spoiler on the rear... I think he could have found a MUCH better one to use. While I like the Pontiac Tech wheels, it's a Chevy. It's got 4 doors...

At least it is a V8 and he did do a little to enhance it. Gone is the smog pump. Larger carb, headers, MSD ignition, 2.5" exhaust if I remember correctly and several other things. It's not as modified as his neighbors 69 Camaro with a SBC 350, geared timing, NOS, headers, 3" Flowmaster exhaust, Cam and other stuff. He also installed a CD changer in his Chevelle. Granted that's kind of old tech now but along with it there are two 10" Sony subs, a couple of Sony amps, Sony head unit and Audiobhan interior speakers.

Overall it's a nice car but... I'd rather have the Camaro LOL. Granted once I get it I'll be swapping the engine shortly there after. I'm not sure how many miles are on the 305 it has now but I'm sure it's got to be in the 150-200k range by now. I'm just not sure which way I'll go with the engine. Easiest would be a fresher 305 but the TPI from the Iroc is another possibility. Or I could take a page from the 4th gen and go to 3800 just with a turbo. Possibly one of the LS engines. It all depends on how much work each one is and if I can find a suitable engine of that type in my price range. The biggest problem though is, where am I going to put woofers in it?! I may have to be content with a couple of 8's in the stock rear 6X9 locations .

Edit: Oh and I don't know if I mentioned it above but after the first weekish of driving the idle stabilized itself so I didn't have to adjust the throttle cable or anything. I'm guessing the engine just needed a little break in time since it had been pulled and sat in inventory and all for awhile before I got it and had it running again. The rear oil seal leaked for the first couple of weeks also but has since stopped. I did put in some Lucas Oil Stabilizer when I noted the leak figuring the seals in the engine could probably use a little help getting soft again.

Although granted there are some newer 4-door vehicles that are kind of sporty right from the factory, 4-door sedans from the 60's, 70's, 80's etc do not look sexy... no matter what size rear spoiler's been added. You've got far better taste in cars than your old man.

I was curious about the Chevelle because years ago I had a '67 ChevelleSS396. Oooo, that was a fun car.
