Good luck looking for your car.

I have to whole heartedly disagree here. I know a lot about the mn12 platform, and the 96-7 are far and away the best year. Best looks, performance, everything. I owned a 96 LX Sport and that thing was a beast with a limited slip diff and tons of power. A very fun car. Plus I got it for well under $2000.

As for the OP, a Thunderbird/Cougar/Mark VII will be a lot of the car for the money. Especially if you can get ahold of a manual Turbo Coupe or Super Coupe.

Alright first step done... I just traded my POS 85 Trans Am for a very nice but rough 87 GT. the body is perfect, beautiful saddle interior, paint is okay, needs a few engine parts but I still have the complete drivetrain from my old car to take pieces from. Once I do a light restore on my new GT Fiero, I will flip it and think I will buy a CRX Manual. Then flip that and buy a turbo supra or RX7. I'm on my way!

If you get a CRX Si you'll keep it.

Unless you hate front wheel Drive.

If you get to the point where you're looking at a rotary, and can afford to fuel it up, you'll definitely want to get a solid test drive in. There's nothing like pulling 8k + RPM when hopping on the highway for a stretch. I think an FC vert would be a fun driver.

I do appreciate CRX's but FWD kills the deal for me, plus it's more I need a solid base car that I can then flip (CRX) and get a better car (RX7)

Look at a late C-4 vet or a early C-5. you can get them for under $10,000. My wife pointed out a 85? in the local paper for $3800, running. If you are going to learn to drive, you might as well learn in a car that is a handling car. The mazda mx5 2 seater is a fun car. You get what you pay for.
Back in 74 i paid $500. for my 63 vet. Raced it for ten years.
